The newer C-Classes and E-Classes like the Mercedes E350 have really made cabin filter replacement much more of a chore. No longer are the cabin filters located under the hood in a large plastic box like their predecessors. Now you must earn your purified air if you choose to do this job yourself. While this job is can be a bit tedious, it is really not that difficult. Mercedes-Benz recommends replacing these cabin filters every 20k miles.

The cabin filter is located in the heater case and is accessible from under the dash on the right side (passenger in USA). Before you even get your tools out remove the floor mats, items on the floor and items in the net pocket. Move the passenger seat all the way back. You’ll be getting on your back looking under the dash at some point.

Replacement

Remove the screws and pull the front of the panel downward.

Remove the screws and pull the panel downward. First you will need to remove the underdash panel. Remove the Torx screws holding the front of the panel in place. Before you try to rip it out there are a few things to do first. There may be a footwell vent temp sensor attached to the channel. Twist to remove it, no need to unplug it first and risk breaking it. Unplug the courtesy lamp. Next, there is a large plastic hook attached to the panel. Push it to the right to release it. There is a large flap that sits behind footwell trim. Twist the panel in a counterclockwise motion and it should come free.

Mercedes underdash panels have many features. Mercedes underdash panels have many features.

With the panel removed you will be able to see your blower motor and cabin filter. The cabin filter will have 2 small metal hooks attached to them from the factory. Pry these off with a flathead screwdriver. Next, slide the white latch towards you. The filter should disengage and pull out easily. Clean up any debris if necessary.

Some filters come with a new latch while others do not. They transfer easily. To install the filter push it up into place loosely. Now get on your back and put both palms of your hands on the ends of the latch while pushing upwards. Slide the latch away from you ensuring the all 4 locking tangs are engaged. Install the metal clips if you aren’t totally frustrated by this point. This is optional.

Installation of the underdash panel is reversed from the removal with a few notes. First pull the front section the carpet down. It makes life much easier. Second, the flap on the right side must be bent backwards in order to slip it behind the footwell trim. It is optional to completely cut this off the panel because it can pose an unnecessary struggle. Pat yourself on the back because you just completed the most difficult cabin filter replacement job of any Mercedes.
