The BMW 1500 is part of BMWs New Class of cars, also known as Neu Klasse. The 1500 was the savior of BMW as it sold enough cars to pay dividends to shareholders for the first time in close to 20 years. The 1500 was introduced to the world at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor show and was sold in the Unisted States from 1961-1964. The 1500 received BMWs new M10 4-cylinder engine that would be the work horse of many BMW models up until the mid-1980s. As a precursor to the 3-series the 1500 featured sport performance and good handling while being fuel efficient. The 1.5 liter M10 engine features an over square design allowing it to produce 80 horsepower and go from 0-60 in 15 seconds. Earlier production models had issues with gear boxes, trailing arm mounting point failures, and axle failure. The 1500 would be replaced by the 1600 in 1964 but was still made available to markets where engine displacement larger than 1500ccs would incur higher taxes.
