The Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact crossover utility vehicle (CUV) built by Volkswagens Auto 5000 devision. Production of the Tiguan began in Europe in 2007 as a 2008 model year, although it was not available to the North American market until the 2009 model year. The Tiguan is based largely off of the Volkswagen Golfs PQ35 platform, and is powered by a 4 cylinder engine. To come up with the name for this vehicle, Volkswagen polled over 350,000 people, and the voters chose the mane Tiguan, which is a combination of the words Tiger and Leguan (German word for iguana). As of 2011, over 700,000 Tiguans had already been sold worldwide and it is still being built presently making it a very successful vehicle. Volkswagen has even experimented with alternative fuels and tested concepts of a Tiguan HyMotion concept which includes Volkswagens hydrogen fuel cell technology, although there is no set plan or timeline as of yet to implement the vehicle.
