The Volkswagen Dasher is a car that was sold in the United States / North American market for the 1974 through 1981 model years. The Dasher was named such only in North America; in Europe this was the first generation of vehicles to wear the Passat badge. Mechanically the Dasher was almost identical to the Audi Fox, it was among the first of the light-weight front wheel drive Volkswagens that helped shape the modern VW. This was a huge step up from the old rear engine air cooled technology that was so commonly used by the German automaker previously. The car was noted for being remarkably roomy despite its compact size. Also the quality of the Dasher was largely favored by many when compared to some of the competing American compact family cars available at the time like the Ford Pinto or Chevrolet Vega. The Volkswagen Dasher was very economical as well which was a huge plus, especially with the gas crisis and skyrocketing fuel costs of the time. The engine was a gasoline powered 1.5L in 1974 and 1975, which was replaced by a 1.6L in 1976. In 1978 a diesel engine was introduced that produced 48 horsepower. Despite its lackluster performance with a 0-60mph acceleration time of over 19 seconds, this engine achieved levels of fuel economy that are still high by todays standards- well over 40mpg!
