About Audi A3
Theres 3 generations of the Audi A3 including the Typ 8L produced from 1996 to 2003 and the second generation Typ 8P produced from 2003 to 2012 and most recent 8V. The A3 is a compact based on the VW Group A platform. This platform is shared with several models including the Audi TT, VW Golf, and VW Touran. The model was initially released for the European market in 1996 bringing Audi back into the compact car segment. At first the Audi A3 was only available as a 3-door hatchback with front and all-wheel drive options available.More powerful engines were available for 1999 with the 1.8T that cranked out 178 hp and a 1.9 TDI diesel was also brought into the mix. The 1999 model year also introduced the new 5-door body style, the model was further revised in late 2000 changing out the headlights and tail lamps for a new fresh look. The second generation of the Audi A3 was designed by Gary Telaak and was showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003. In mid-2003 a 2.0 Turbo FSI engine was available making 197 hp along with a 3.2 liter VR6 with 247 hp engine option. The 2005 model year marked the first year that the Audi A3 was available in North America with the unique sport back body. The S Line trim level was an option enhancing exterior body features. The third generation of the Audi A3 was available for the 2015 US model year with production starting in 2012 for other markets. Its the first Audi vehicle to use the flexible modular VW Group MQ8 platform, available as a 3-door hatchback or 5-door sportback. This new generation Audi A3 8V chassis features a 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TDI power plant options. The Audi A3 sedan was shown at the 2013 New York Auto Show. The all new Audi S3 is powered by a 2.0 liter TFSI engine with an impressive 296 hp from just a 4-cylinder engine. This new engine is reworked compared to a run of the mill 2.0 liter TFSI using new pistons, connecting rods and rings further strengthening the engine. This results in 0-60 times in the sub 5 second range with manual and an even faster sprint with the lightning fast shifting S-Tronic transmission.
