Fuel Pump Module Assembly

A fuel pump module assembly is a complete unit, typically located inside the fuel tank, that delivers pressurized fuel to the engine. Unlike a standalone fuel pump, the module will sometimes include:

  • Electric fuel pump – draws and pressurizes fuel.
  • Fuel filter/strainer – removes debris and contaminants.
  • Fuel pressure regulator – maintains consistent fuel pressure.
  • Fuel level sending unit – communicates fuel level to the gauge.

Key functions:

  • Supplies pressurized fuel to the injectors for combustion.
  • Maintains proper fuel pressure under different driving conditions.
  • Provides accurate fuel level readings to the dashboard gauge.
Fuel Pump Module Assembly Failure Symptoms
  • Engine stalling or no-start condition – pump fails to deliver fuel.
  • Loss of power or hesitation – weak fuel pressure causes poor acceleration.
  • Hard starting – requires long cranking before the engine runs.

Tale of woe...
I bought this pump in lieu of the Genuine Volvo 31261819 specified for my 2006 XC90 as the Google AI and another large online retailer of Volvo parts that I won't buy from said it's the same part. Given that the genuine Volvo part is $720, I went for this. The good: It seems to be the same part, perfect fit, works as expected. $450 cheaper. The bad: The pump comes with a new fuel level sender / sensor, which of course I used. After the install, we ran through one tank of gas and everything was fine. On the second tank, the car died with ½ tank showing on the gauge. It felt like it ran out of gas, but ½ tank showing. We got it towed home, checked no fuel pressure, and took the pump out. The tank was dry as the Sahara inside. Really impressive, hardly any drops of gas inside. It turns out that Volvo averages the two senders and if one is full up, and the other full down, it shows ½ rather than something sensible like 0 or show an error. It turns out there was a piece of carbon that looks exactly like the carbon Bosch uses for the sensor lodged on the contacts. I cleaned the carbon out (and thoroughly cleaned the whole pump assy), put it back in and it works fine. So be sure to give this a full cleaning before install, or you may be doing it twice. As a side note, I kept everything as clean as possible on the tank around the hole it installs in, but I found that pretty big pieces of stuff can hide in the lock ring grooves. Be sure those are clean or you may find you have a leak as what hides in there goes straight to the O-ring when knocked loose. The worse: The car started running rough about 30 miles before it finally punked out because of no gas. So it was starving for gas for 30 miles, and running super lean. The car seemed low on power once the new pump was reinstalled, but otherwise seemed ok and throwing no codes. Unfortunately running lean burned the valves and one failed shortly after, 0 compression on #4 and 20 psi low on #3. Curse the rotten luck. So it's time for a valve job. So, in summary: Clean your new parts regardless if they look clean. Don't even think dirty thoughts around the fuel tank when it's open. Reset your trip meter and verify fuel gauge function over a few fill ups after any in-tank work. If your car starts to run rough for any reason, don't drive it, figure it out first. Might save you a valve job or the car a trip to eternity. Good luck!

Twas a Nightmare
I ended up having to do this job three times. The first one I bought was from RockAuto, they made a mistake with Vin# fitment and I was able to do a return with them. I decided to go to FCP Euro this time to not have an issue like that. After installing this part I started having issues but because I did multiple jobs to the car I couldn't determine it was the fuel pump. There was no indication that it was the fuel pump and I ended up spending money on things that weren't needed to solve it. The car broke down on me on a road trip and and I had to give up and take it to the only mechanic available at the time. The dealership couldn't find the issue for months and it broke down on me multiple times I drove back out to pick up the car. We were finally able to determine it was defective fuel pump. With all the tow trucks, long drives, parts, and dealership labor, it cost me thousands. FCP Euro acknowledged the issue when I brought it up to them and took the part back and gave me a new one. I installed it in a O'reilly's parking lot and haven't had issues since. FCP Euro tried to make things right with $45, but you could say the issue is with Bosch. It's just one of those unfortunate circumstances I suppose. I hope by y'all reading this you won't go through what I did.

Powerful pump
Pump was dying on me, replaced it with this one and there's a ton of pressure now. Don't test lighters you find under the back seat while you're doing this job!

Works great
Got this and a fuel sender for my car, had fuel gauge issue and the fuel wasn't equalizing in each side of the tank, fixed it no problem. You can absolutely do this without the tool. I used two big screwdrivers and used them to leverage on themselves by crossing them to take the locking ring out. I really didn't feel like wasting $50 on a tool I will use once.
