Referred to as a tension strut, a common source of clunks and suspension play

Your X5's tension strut is an integral part of the front suspension and is also a common source of clunking and vibration while driving at highway speed. Typically, the inner bushing will tear allowing for this arm to have excessive movement when the suspension is under high loads. The inner bushing can be replaced separately from the arm but we typically recommend replacing the entire arm as a one piece assembly to avoid the need to press out the old bushing and press in the new bushing.

Per BMW, this arm is only exchangeable in pairs.

Suspension Control Arm and Ball Joint Assembly

Control arms are crucial link in a vehicle's suspension connecting the suspension to a vehicle's subframe. These pieces are usually hinged to allow for suspension to travel and articulate as the vehicle rides over obstructions in the road and while the vehicle turns. Many vehicles such as those with independent suspensions have multiple links and feature several connection points and arms to offer better ride quality and comfort.

As bushings and joints in a control arm begin to wear you may notice a looseness feel in your suspension. And while many arms have replaceable and serviceable individual components, many still require the replacement of the entire arm. Below are signs of when a replacement control arm may be needed:

  • Play in suspension joints where these arms meet the subframe and/or knuckle

Breathe of Fresh Air
These fit VERY VERY firm and acted like Meyle HD should be and perform incredible. I chose these over Lemforder because I feel like Meyle HD focuses on heavier handling. The E53 is already a 6,000 lb vehicle, and the control arm weighed significantly more than the OEM. Best option IMO
