A common source of performance issues on N54 powered BMW's and early production N55 engines, includes o-ring p/n 13517571363

High pressure fuel pumps, or more simply HPFP's, are a common trouble item on N54 powered BMW's. A failed HPFP can cause your car to go into limp mode or in extreme cases will leave you stranded on the side of the road.

During the rebuild process, the core is completely disassembled. All parts are cleaned and inspected during this time. From there all seals and o-ring are replaced with OE or OE equivalent parts during the reassembly process. The pump oil is replaced with OE equivalent fluid. After reassembly, each pump is tested at vehicle RPM on a test bench to check for leaks and output pressure. The test report traceable by serial number is provided in the box.

Please note: Every remanufactured Rein high-pressure fuel pump includes a test sheet that will match the serial number of the pump. These pumps are tested after assembly on a test rig using fuel. The smell of fuel is normal due to this test procedure and any smudges or other marks have only occurred due to the testing procedure taking place before packaging the pump.

Direct Injection High Pressure Fuel Pump

A direct injection high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) is a critical component in modern gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. Unlike traditional fuel pumps, it boosts fuel pressure to extremely high levels (often over 2,000 psi) so fuel can be directly injected into the combustion chamber. This enables better fuel atomization, improved efficiency, and higher power output. The HPFP is typically driven by the camshaft and works in tandem with a low-pressure fuel pump. Over time, wear, contamination, or internal failure can lead to drivability issues.

Direct Injection High Pressure Fuel Pump Failure Symptoms
  • Engine performance problems – hard starting, hesitation, misfires, or loss of power under load.
  • Fuel-related issues – check engine light, lean/rich codes, or reduced fuel economy.
  • Noises or leaks – ticking/whining sounds from the pump or visible fuel leakage at the pump area.

Fixed cold starting!
Had long cranking on cold starts. Every so often I would get "drive train malfunction error". Did some research and figured it was the hpfp. I went against buying the bmw brand and decided to get the remanufactured unit. It took about 3-4 hours to change start to finish. A little akward working in the space but not too difficult. After replacing it starts like new. Love the lifetime guarantee. Also the shipping was quick and core return was simple. I do feel they should pay for core return shipping. It's just a bit inconvenient and I'm sure their shipping price would be cheaper.

Wonderful Replacement Option

I have a 08 E90 335i and run full E85 with Port Injection on upgraded RB Turbos. Would this still be a good option or do you recommend a new OEM HPFP? FYI it’s not a daily driver.

The Rein remanufactured pump and Genuine pump are the same (same internals, same design) so functionally there is no difference between them. It doesn't really matter which option you go with, they will perform identically. Rein includes a performance chart with the pump from when it was bench tested.
