Product Information

Referred to as a Tension Strut by BMW, includes inner bushing and outer ball joint

As the miles rack up on your BMW it is not uncommon to start noticing that the front end suspension feels loose and unresponsive. This is mostly due to worn out control arm bushings and ball joints. We highly recommend replacing these components at the first sign of wear to ensure that your BMW continues to be an Ultimate Driving Machine.

Per BMW it is absolutely mandatory to replace these arms in pairs. Failure to do so could result in improper service life and performance.

Low Mileage Ball Joint Failures
I replaced the tension struts on my 2011 E91 a year or so ago with these TRW-branded M3 upgrade parts after the originals wore out after about 120K - the replacements didn't last 10k before the front right ball joint started making noise. Obvious in/out play in the joint was present when I pulled these off, and their replacements are now doing it again in under 5K miles. I would highly recommend steering clear of the TRW arms until this is addressed - I will be asking FCP Euro if they'll let me warranty them with Meyle arms instead so I'm not replacing these in 5K miles again. It appears that I'm not the only one having issues and it all started after TRW transferred manufacturing to Malaysia - I'd steer clear of any non-European COO parts from TRW until they prove this has been addressed.

TRW Tension Struts - 1 star
Do not waste your time buying into the hype of M3 Tension struts...I did this upgrade to get better feel and road feedback, instead what I got was some junky parts from Malaysia. hallow clunking noise starts 5k into driving the car. dont waste your time and buy Lemforder.

Great upgrade for my 128i
I bought this thrust arm to replace the worn out original equipment on my 2008 128i (E88). The installation was straightforward (see the excellent video by Gareth on this), and effect of this M-series thrust arm on handling is very much improved--and without any noticeable adverse effect on ride comfort. I would highly recommend this as a replacement for anyone having to replace worn-out front end suspension components.

OE M3 arms, solid bushings
These are the same as factory M3 tension struts but with "BMW" scratched off. Exact same dimensions as the factory tension struts (also made by TRW) on my 2009 E90 328i but with a solid rubber bushings instead of fluid filled ones. 21mm balljoint locknut is included.

Question Posted by a customer
Will adding the pair of these tension struts to my bmw 128i add negative camber to the front? I believe it was mentioned in the video for these parts. But wasn’t sure if that’s because he’s installing the control arms too.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The tension strut will not add negative camber.
Question Posted by a customer
Looking to correct low speed ~40 mph braking shudder on 2011 335d. Can I just replace the tension struts and leave the stock wishbones for another day? Cheers, Kurt
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
A common source of front-end vibrations on E9X chassis cars can be attributed to the tension strut inner bushings. However, those vibrations are usually constant at a speed or while accelerating through that speed. Since the shudder happens under braking it is recommended to also check for runout in the brake rotor and wheel hub. If runout is minimal on the rotating mass the next step is to check the tension strut bushings. The tension struts can be replaced independently of the wishbones but the tension struts, like other suspension components, should be replaced in matched pairs. Also, this is an M3 specific part (can be installed in place of the factory E9X non M part) but it has a solid rubber bushing vs the factory-equipped hydraulic filled bushing.
Question Posted by a customer
I have an '07 e92 335. Previous owner said he had the m3 control arms kit installed, but this one (front right) recently snapped and I'm looking to replace it. The full kit says it will fit the 335, but this piece on its own says it will not. Just wanted to check and make sure that this will indeed with my 335, thanks :)
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, this will fit a 335i.
