Also known as the tension strut bushing, a common failure item
This bushing secures the tension/traction strut to the front subframe. It is common for this control arm bushing to fail with high mileage due to the amount of stress this bushing endures. If this bushing has failed you will hear knocking from the front end over bumps and you will physically be able to move the tension strut with little effort.
Per BMW, this bushing can only be replaced in pairs.

What is the outside diameter of this bushing? Is it identical to a non-M?

The outer diameter of this bushing is the same when compressed (split sleeve design) as a standard non M control arm bushing. The only difference between E9X M3 thrust arms and E9X non xDrive thrust arms is this bushing.

Does this imply that when purchasing this, you will get 2 bushings? Or you will only get 1 and will need to buy 2?

It is recommended to replace in pairs but this does not indicate the quantity you receive per order. This bushing is sold and priced each (individually) and you will need to order a quantity of two in order to replace both sides following the TIS recommendation.
