Volvo turbo engines are different from superchargers in that the turbo's compressor gets its motive energy from the exhaust instead of the crankshaft. Exhaust passing through the exhaust turbine housing pushes against the exhaust turbine wheel, spinning it in much the same way as a kid blowing on a pinwheel. The exhaust turbine transfers this spin to the compressor wheel, which sucks air in through its center. The compressor wheel then slings that air outward against the compressor housing, compressing it using centripetal force.
