Modern advances in safety have revolutionized the way we build vehicles. From crumple zones and curtain airbags to lane-keep assist and emergency braking systems, today’s vehicles are objectively safer to be in. Those safety improvements have also altered the way we see at night with new bulbs that deliver much more output than the traditional Halogen kind. A leader in lighting technology, the Philips D1S Xenon bulb is one of the best bulbs on the market and was likely the bulb originally fitted in your HID headlights.

Halogen vs Xenon Bulbs

Xenon headlight bulbs are a significant upgrade over Halogen bulbs in just about every way. Rather than using a filament trapped in a Halogen gas mixture, a Xenon bulb has two electrodes positioned inside the glass bulb filled with Xenon gas. An electric ballast connected to the electrodes sends a current through them that arcs through the gas and creates light. Although that’s similar to how a Halogen bulb operates, the Xenon is far more effective in every way.

Xenon Bulb Benefits

• Over twice the brightness of a Halogen bulb

• Light beam reaches farther and wider

• Low failure rate thanks to high vibration resistance and shock resistance

• Requires less electricity

• Over triple the lifespan of a Halogen bulb

Philips D1S Bulb

The Philips D1S bulb is an enormously popular bulb with HID headlight setups. As a major supplier to auto manufacturers, Philips' products are tried and tested. Their D1S 85415C1 bulb is a direct fit into a CVS-receipt-length list of vehicles, including but not limited to the Porsche 993 Carrera, the P2 Volvo XC90, the Mercedes-Benz W211 E550, and the E90 M3. Even today, their lighting products are utilized by nearly a third of the new vehicles on the road. The Philips D1S Xenon bulb is one you can count on to deliver OE-like results.

Always wear gloves when installing a D1S Xenon bulb, or any Xenon bulb for that matter. Touching the glass bulb with your exposed fingers will leave a light oil residue on the bulb surface. As it shines bright, the oil will cause the bulb to heat up without uniformity and can cause it to break prematurely. The same rule also applies to any Halogen bulb.
