The hatch lock actuator is an electro-mechanical device that is responsible for latching and opening the tailgate of your Volkswagen. When this device fails, it typically will prevent you from opening the rear tailgate and/or will produce a fault code for an incorrect reading of the tailgate being open when it's closed which will give you an alert of a door ajar.
