Product Information

The heater core is responsible for the heat transfer from the engine coolant to the interior cabin of your Volkswagen. A heater core has an inlet and an outlet through which the coolant flows through. Once the coolant flows through the heater core, the blower motor blows air across the unit and the heat is then transferred to the interior of the vehicle. The construction of a heater core is usually a metal or metal/plastic combination. One of the main reasons a heater core needs to be replaced is because it is leaking. Typically, you'll know it is leaking as you will likely smell the sweet smell of antifreeze and/or notice coolant leaking inside the cabin of the vehicle.

Common Failure Symptoms:

  • Lack of heat emitting from your air vents
  • Leaking coolant inside the passenger compartment
  • Film left on the windshield when the vehicle sits
  • Sweet smell within the passenger compartment
HVAC Heater Core

The HVAC heater core is a small radiator-like component located within the vehicle's HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system. It transfers heat from the engine coolant into the cabin, warming the air that passes through the HVAC system and providing heat to the vehicle’s interior. As hot coolant flows through the heater core, the blower motor pushes air over it, and the heated air is then directed into the cabin.

HVAC Heater Core Failure Symptoms
  • Weak or No Heat in the Cabin: If the heater core is partially or fully clogged, the warm air may not reach the cabin effectively, resulting in weak or no heat even when the heater is turned on high
  • Sweet or Musty Smell in the Cabin: The heater core contains engine coolant, which has a distinctive sweet smell. If there’s a leak, you may notice this odor inside the car. Over time, this smell can become musty as the leaking coolant sits in the ventilation system
  • Fogged-Up Windows: A leaking heater core can allow coolant to enter the HVAC system, which then evaporates onto the windshield, causing a foggy or hazy layer on the inside of the windows. This fog is often sticky and hard to wipe away.

Heater Core Review
Fitment was good and no issues so far. It's been about 2 months. had minor imperfections in the metal grooves in a couple of spots, but that was negligible. The part didn't have any genuine VW logos or stickers, but FCP customer support assured me that it's an OEM part and vaico as the OEM manufacturer. So I took a leap of faith and went ahead with the install on MK6 Jetta.
