Liftgate Lift Support

Liftgate supports, or gas struts, are pressurized cylinders designed to hold up a liftgate or rear hatch. Over time, they can fail due to a pressure drop, often caused by exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, or contaminants. Cold weather, in particular, can reduce the gas pressure inside the struts, making them less effective at supporting the gate during cooler conditions.

Liftgate Lift Support Failure Symptoms
  • The hatch may feel heavier or fail to stay open as high as before due to a gas leak in the lift support
  • Grease or oil leaking from the existing shocks
  • Seeping noise or creaks coming from the shocks when lifting the hatch

Hatch shocks
I noticed I was having to help the rear hatch of my Tiguan up and occasionally bumping my head with it opened to maximum height, which never happened before. The shocks seem to have lost about 2-3” of max extension. Ordered these from FCP, install took maybe five minutes with the help of a small flat head screwdriver and a broom stick. These are definitely OE parts, the text printed on them is identical to the factory ones. Rear hatch opens fully now (no more bumping my head) and has so much assist that once it’s unlatched it raises itself to max height, so I’m not missing the automatic trunk opening features newer vehicles have. FCP FTW.
