Product Information

Fuel Tank Cap

A fuel tank cap, or gas cap, is a component that seals the opening of the vehicle’s fuel tank to prevent fuel vapors from escaping and to maintain the pressure within the fuel system. It plays a role in preventing fuel contamination, maintaining emissions control, and ensuring fuel efficiency.

Fuel Tank Cap Failure Symptoms
  • Check Engine Light: One of the most common signs of a faulty or loose fuel tank cap is the Check Engine Light illuminating. Common fault codes are P0455 and P0457 with verbiage highlighting the evaporative emissions system.
  • Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) System Issues: A faulty gas cap can disrupt the vehicle’s evaporative emissions control system, leading to performance issues in the system, triggering error codes, and potentially resulting in emissions test failures.
  • Fuel Smell Around or in the Vehicle: If the fuel tank cap is not sealing properly or is damaged, fuel vapors may escape, causing a noticeable gasoline smell around the vehicle, especially near the fuel filler area.

About Genuine VW

The Volkswagen Group, also known as “VAG”, consists of Volkswagen, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Porsche, Ducati, MAN, Scania, SEAT, and Skoda. The original parts used by VW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine VW” brand. Manufactured under the direction of VW, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are available exclusively through the VW Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your VW are not necessarily manufactured by VW. No cause for concern, as VW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for VW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine VW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a VW logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming directly from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

VW Fuel Tank Cap (Passat) - Genuine VW Audi 561201550E
At 103,000 miles I had a check engine light for evap leak. I have never had a gas cap fix my CEL but this time it did. So glad I ordered it from FCP Euro. OEM part works perfect.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by a customer
Is this truly an OEM gas cap? The original VW cap is quite complex and as I am trying to eliminate a small evap leak code causing a check engine light, I want to make sure I'm going with a true VW OEM cap. An aftermarket would make me question if it doesn't end up working.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This is not an OEM gas cap, it is a Genuine VW cap exactly as you would receive from the VW dealer.
