Product Information

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler in your Passat TDI with the CKRA engine found in model years 2012-2014 are known to cause mysterious coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, and/or P0401/P2457 codes due to internal leaks which are often confused with water pump or heater core failures which may result in severe coolant loss or in-cylinder issues. This kit includes everything needed to replace the EGR Cooler in your vehicle.

Common Failures:

  • Coolant Loss: Persistent coolant loss with no visible external leaks on the ground.
  • White Smoke: Significant white or gray exhaust smoke caused by coolant entering the exhaust stream
  • DTC's: P0401 (Insufficient Flow), P026A (EGR Cooler Performance), or P2457 (EGR Cooling System Performance).
  • Sludge/Clogging: The EGR cooler is prone to clogging, which can lead to heater core restrictions due to solids precipitating from the coolant
Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Cooler

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) cooler is an air to liquid heat exchanger that uses engine coolant to reduce exhaust gas temperatures prior to recirculating it back into the engines intake system. This system is intended to reduce NOX emissions but also significantly reduces thermal stress on cylinder head gaskets and intake/exhaust valves. It is recommended to regular inspect EGR coolers to ensure there is no antifreeze leak coming from them.
