Product Information
A dual-mass flywheel serves as a rotating mechanical device that stores rotational energy as it helps maintain engine rotation in between ignition cycles while also providing a friction surface for the clutch disc and a mounting point for the pressure plate. The Dual-mass flywheel has an inner mass and an outer mass which serve two different functions. The inner mass is synced to the engine's inertia while the outer mass is synced to the transmission's inertia. Internal to the flywheel are springs which act as a damping system and are designed to reduce drivetrain vibrations and allow for smoother clutch operation.
With that said, with age and mileage, a dual-mass flywheel can wear out and develop an issue with the damping system which can cause severe vibrations. If you're experiencing extreme drivetrain vibrations, you may need a new dual-mass flywheel and we also recommend replacing it with every clutch service to prevent future failure.
A clutch flywheel is a heavy, circular metal disc (usually made of steel or cast iron) mounted on the rear of the engine’s crankshaft in manual transmission vehicles. It plays a key role in both engine operation and clutch engagement.
Clutch Flywheel Failure Symptoms- Clutch slippage or poor engagement – worn or damaged flywheel surface reduces grip.
- Vibrations or shuddering – felt when engaging the clutch due to hot spots, warping, or cracks.
- Difficulty starting the engine – damaged flywheel teeth prevent the starter motor from engaging properly.
About Genuine VW
The Volkswagen Group, also known as “VAG”, consists of Volkswagen, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, Porsche, Ducati, MAN, Scania, SEAT, and Skoda. The original parts used by VW to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine VW” brand. Manufactured under the direction of VW, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are available exclusively through the VW Dealership network.
You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your VW are not necessarily manufactured by VW. No cause for concern, as VW designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for VW for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine VW parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a VW logo.
Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming directly from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.
