A transmission oil cooler is a critical component in managing the operating temperature of the transmission fluid. Maintaining the correct window of the operating temperature of the transmission is critical in maintaining its service life, and if the fluid overheats, it could lead to premature transmission failure.

The transmission cooler thermostat acts similarly to that of the engine coolant system thermostat in that it opens and closes at a certain temperature ultimately regulating the temperature the fluid inside of the transmission. If it opens, it allows the fluid to circulate through the oil cooler, and If closed, it keeps the fluid within the transmission ultimately increasing the temperature much faster.

If you're noticing leaking or having an issue with regulating the temperature with the transmission circuit, you may want to inspect your transmission oil cooler, its o-rings, and the thermostat and replace any faulty components as necessary.
