Product Information

The steering wheel clock spring is responsible for maintaining an electrical connection for components found on the steering wheel such as the SRS airbag and other various steering wheel controls. The clockspring consists of a coiled wire that is wound up to either uncoil or recoil depending on the direction in which the steering wheel is turned. Over time the clocking spring can wear out and cause component failure and warning lights to appear / diagnostic trouble codes. The most common fault is typically an airbag warning light on the instrument cluster.

Air Bag Clockspring

An air bag clockspring (also called a spiral cable or contact reel) is a coil-shaped electrical connector located inside the steering wheel. It maintains a continuous electrical connection between the vehicle’s wiring harness and steering wheel-mounted components—such as the airbag, horn, and steering wheel controls—while allowing the wheel to turn freely.

Air Bag Clockspring Failure Symptoms
  • Airbag warning light illuminated, due to lost connection to the driver’s airbag.
  • Non-functioning steering wheel controls, such as radio buttons or cruise control switches.
  • Horn not working, as the circuit through the clockspring may be broken.
