Liftgate Lift Support

Liftgate supports, or gas struts, are pressurized cylinders designed to hold up a liftgate or rear hatch. Over time, they can fail due to a pressure drop, often caused by exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, or contaminants. Cold weather, in particular, can reduce the gas pressure inside the struts, making them less effective at supporting the gate during cooler conditions.

Liftgate Lift Support Failure Symptoms
  • The hatch may feel heavier or fail to stay open as high as before due to a gas leak in the lift support
  • Grease or oil leaking from the existing shocks
  • Seeping noise or creaks coming from the shocks when lifting the hatch

What a difference!
The original struts on our XC70 could barely hold the tailgate up, especially when cold. These are the exact same parts that Volvo uses (even says "Stabilus" on the old Volvo-branded ones I took out). What a difference these new ones make! You have to pull pretty hard to close it the first couple of times, but after that, it adjusts to a slightly easier pressure.

Came in good condition, only thing that was missing was locking pins, but I used the ones from old supports, now they are in place and working.

No more dropping trunk door
I realized my struts had started to leak when the trunk door fell on my back for the first time while I was getting something from it when the temps dropped below 30 F. It happened a second time and I knew then it was time to replace the struts. It took about an hour of my time and required the removal of all the trim in the trunk to access the struts under the headliner, but now it actually takes some effort to close the trunk and it no longer falls shut.

Good as new
This is a really easy job, and these parts are great for how cheap they are. The tailgate works good as new again. Be sure to keep the old clips, as the new ones didn't come with them.

Onward and upward
Seem to work well. Make sure you support hatch with 2x4 or similar during install. Having one side disconnected may allow open hatch to fall. Careful removing corner plastic interior trim, easy to crack area near hatch opening lip.

Great replacement struts
These are great replacement struts at a good price (I changed mine out on my 2004 XC70) - but the Stabilus struts do not include the safety retainer clip; the original Volvo OEM parts do. The clips are available at FCP separately, search for part 987185. One of my original struts was missing one...and I don't like the idea of it popping off under pressure.

Fixes drooping rear hatches
Two of these have stopped my V70 from hitting me in the head. Several plastic panels need to be removed before installing but there are several good videos for the procedure online.

A pair of Stabilus tail gate struts 1200n
They works perfectly, now it's actually harder to close the tailgate then open it. And a great service from FCP Shipped to Israel

Tailgate Strut
These struts worked great in my 07 XC70. Original OEMs would no longer support the tailgate. Part was made by the same company as the originals both by Stabilus. As others have said take your time and be gentle removing the interior parts. Make sure they're removed in sequence. Top center, upper sides above the rear window, lower trim above the wheel wells (only needs to be loosened) and lastly the corner trim. Tailgate needs to be supported literally all the way up. I cut a 1x2 board which worked well. Clips are a bit of a challenge to remove. Used a small screw driver to parttially open up the clip then a seond screwdriver to remove it. Initially tried to install the rear joint first but was unable to get the front to snap on. Had to remove the rear again and then tried installing the front first with the clip and then the rear which worked a lot better. R
