Product Information

There are multiple possible steering racks installed in your Volvo from the factory. This steering rack is a direct replacement for the following numbers: 9209982, 867124, 8684272, 30723784, 30778111, 31202966. IF you do not know what rack is currently installed in the car, then please contact us with your VIN to avoid ordering the incorrect part.

-To determine what type of steering system you have (with or w/o speed dependant/sensitive steering), look for a pressure control solenoid that is mounted on the steering rack. If you do have this solenoid then you do have the speed dependant/sensitive steering type.

  • This rack has thread-in style pressure fittings.

Volvo changed the design on the rack so a new pressure line, new return line, and coupler must also be replaced at the time of rack replacement. When replacing this rack & pinion it is also imperative that you order the following items:

  • P/n 8684299
  • P/n 8684307

  • P/n 30741950

  • It is imperative that you completely flush out your vehicle's power steering system fluid to remove any contaminants or foreign bodies BEFORE you install this rack to avoid premature failure.

Rack and Pinion Assembly

Power steering racks (rack and pinion) are usually a lifetime component for most cars. However, there are certain scenarios in which a power steering rack can fail and will need to be replaced. We often find that poor maintenance of the system (leaks, old fluid, damaged hoses) can cause premature failure. Part failures within the rack itself are also common. Seals can fail causing leaks and poor system pressure. We also find that worn inner tie rod boots that are damaged can allow for water, dirt, and other contaminants to get inside the rack causing havoc with the power steering system as a whole. If you rack is leaking or making grinding sounds, it will need to be replaced.

Purchase 4 982793 Screws As Well
The rack fits fine but does not come with the mounting studs the original rack came with. We removed the old studs but determined they were not a good fit for the new rack. Luckily I was able to source suitable bolts where I work. Also the Rein lines needed a little tweaking in order to line up with the rack. Maybe stick with the Genuine Volvo lines.

Power Steering Rack (V70 XC70) - Maval 36050361
Ran into some problems with this unit. Apparently there are two configurations with the same P/N and my vehicle seems to have been caught up in the production cut in between the two at Volvo. The customer service team was excellent in figuring out the previously unrecognized issue, tracking down the right unit for my vehicle, and went as far as having a unit shipped to them for configuration verification before shipping to me. Talked to about three different CS reps in the course several days and all were able to pick up on the current status of my problem and keep me informed of progress. A rarity these days when you have a complex issue and many pieces of information being passed back and forth between phone calls and e-mails. Well done!

Does this rack assembly require the updated steering shaft and hydraulic lines that the new Bosch/Volvo ZF unit requires?

I have a 2003 volvo xc70. How do I determine is this unit has speed sensitive steering? In the Maval catalog this rack doesnt cross to 2003! 2003 comes up with 93142m. Thanks Marc

Hi Marc, the easiest way to determine if the car has speed sensitive steering is to look at the rack where it meets the column. If there's a solenoid mounted on the side with a blue connector, it has speed sensitive steering.
