This is a common failure part for the Volvo P2 (among others), and typically the reason for failure is the motor bearing which will cause a very annoying squealing or chirping noise and erratic speed changes without changing the speed setting. Generally the noise gets louder or more frequent when cold. Occasionally the motor will burn out all together, which can be detected by a distinct burning electronics smell.
