Product Information

Timing chains are like timing belts in that they keep the major components of the engine's combustion cycle in sync. Timing belt tensioners and timing chain tensioners perform the same job of keeping the chain/belt at the right tension. If the timing chain tensioner fails there is a high risk of chain failure, this it should be replaced immediately.

Engine Timing Chain Tensioner

An Engine Timing Chain Tensioner preloads the timing chain to prevent slack in the timing chain system. Too much chain slack will result in derailment of the timing chain which could cause engine failure. Engine timing chain tensioners are typically oil fed so it is vital to verify you have adequate oil volume and pressure when troubleshooting the timing chain tensioner. Common failure systems include chain rattle or slap on startup, or camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes.

Engine Timing Chain Tensioner Failure Symptoms
  • Rattling or Clanking Noise: One of the most common symptoms of a failing timing chain tensioner is a noticeable rattling, clanking, or ticking noise, especially on startup. This is because the tensioner may no longer be maintaining proper tension on the chain, causing it to become loose and hit surrounding components.
  • Check Engine Light: A failing tensioner can cause timing issues that may trigger the vehicle’s check engine light. Common faults codes will correlate to a camshaft/ crankshaft fault as these sensors will detect that the timing is off.
  • Valvetrain or piston damage: As the timing being off significantly enough in an interference engine can cause the valvetrain to come into contact with the piston surface

About Iwis

Iwis was founded in 1916 by Bavarian businessman Johann Baptist to manufacture chains for two-wheeled vehicles, but by 1939 Iwis was making the precision chain solutions for engine and drive systems for companies like BMW and Skoda. Today Iwis is headquareted out of Munich, Germany with a workforce over 1150. The Iwis goal is "100% repeatability across 30 million parts manufactured each day" meaning their manufacturing process goal is perfection across every link they manufacture, be it the first or 30,000,000th link. With attention to detail like that it is no wonder Iwis is a worldwide leader in high-quality chain solutions.

Reduced my "start up rattle" and timing chain noise!
I preemptively replaced this part based on the mileage of my engine. My '99 Eurovan 12V VR6 engine still has the original timing chain and guides and I would like to keep it healthy and replacing the old tensioner made a noticeable improvement in idle quality, engine noise, and reduced the cold start chain rattle sound.
