The engine camshaft position sensor tells the car's computer the position of the camshaft in its rotation for the purposes of things like firing spark and adjusting valve timing (if applicable). Engine Camshaft Position Sensor

The engine camshaft position sensor is used to aid the engine ECU in monitoring the position of the engine camshaft. The feedback from this sensor is used for the optimization of the engine ignition timing. This sensor is sometimes referred to as a CMP sensor and is critical for proper engine operation. Failure of the camshaft position sensor can cause several driveability complaints including stumbling, hesitation on acceleration, and power loss, as well as potentially cause hard start on no-start conditions.
