Unfortunately they don't last forever and are considered to be a major wear item which must be replaced before they completely wear out and damage the brake rotor costing you more in repairs. Brake pads can be made of several materials such as a semi-metallic compound, ceramic compound, or organic. Brake pads are suggested to be checked frequently during oil changes or routine services for wear to ensure you have at least the minimum pad thickness as stated by the car manufacturer.

Great all-around pads with LOW dust
I installed similar pads on my E46 sedan and loved them, and figured they'd be just as great on my 996. I use the car primarily for street driving with the occasional road trip, spirited drive, track day, etc.. and these pads are perfect for that. Purpose-built track pads will likely perform better, but for dual-purpose or mostly street use where sound, consistency, and dusting are a concern these pads are the ticket. I have yet to take them to a track on this car (did a track day in the e46 with these pads, happy with performance), but in all other circumstances that I have used them they are outstanding. Great, predictable brake feel, consistent performance through heat cycles, low noise, and impressively low brake dust (very important if your car has the Sport classic 2 wheels like mine, which are a chore to clean!). Overall very satisfied with these pads, wouldn't hesitate to buy again.

Dont forget the shims and wear indicators
Couldnt edit my previous review - but dont forget to also order the shims and wear indicators. You may not need the wear indicators, but dont want to run out to the dealership if you do. You will need the shims.

Great no-dust pads for 911
I pulled TRW pads which had about 90% off. I was sick of cleaning wheels every week with horrible dust. The TRW pads stoped great, and had a little more surface area than the Akebonos. The Akebonos have 45 degree tapers at the top and bottom. I have this line of Akebonos on 2 Mercedes and a VW in addition to my 996. I don;t like them on the VW, but they rock on everything else.
