Your Window Regulator is what raises and lowers your window (with some help from your window motor if you have power windows). If your window is having difficulty going up and down, chances are it is the regulator that needs replacing and not the motor.
It’s important to check and maintain worn window guides, tracks, and seals. The majority of window regulator failures are a result of a lack of inner door maintenance. You'll find that some basic maintenance goes a long way to help keep your power window system in proper working order. In most cases the existing regulator and guide components have worn simultaneously and may provide satisfactory performance until the regulator eventually fails due to another part in the system failing because it is completely worn out. The life span of a new window regulator will be greatly shortened if your vehicle has worn, dry or dirty guides and tracks. The operation of your window must be carefully inspected before installing this part. Any worn components must be replaced prior to installing this regulator, make sure everything is serviced, cleaned, lubricated and adjusted to manufacturer's specs. It’s possible that warranty claims will be denied if these procedures are skipped.
The window regulator is responsible for moving the piece of glass inside your door up or down. Window regulators can be manual (hand crank style) or powered (rolled up or down with the flip of a switch). Window regulators can fail after thousands of cycles. The most common failure of any window regulator is the pulley where the cable spins around. Most regulators use a very simple pulley system and due to the material they are constructed from they can fail easily with age.
When window regulators are worn and on the verge of failure there are typically warning signs. You will typically hear a clicking from inside the door panel when the window regulator is being operated. Alternatively, the motor which powers the pulley system may become weak over time resulting in a slow moving window in comparison to others. If you are experiencing these types of symptoms it's highly recommended to inspect and replace the worn parts.
Window Regulator Failure Symptoms- It takes multiple attempts to roll window up or down
- Window speed is slower than usual
- Clicking/grinding coming from inside the door as window is moving up or down
- Window out of alignment
- Window will not roll up or down (stuck in position)
