Engine Coolant Thermostat

Thermostats are a simple device which regulates coolant flow through the engine. When cold it will stay closed, stopping coolant flow and helping the engine warm up faster. Once up to temperature, it will open and allow normal coolant flow and maintain proper engine temperature. Always install with the 'jiggle pin' bleed valve at 12 o'clock when possible.

For many applications, multiple temperature ratings are available. These ratings denote when the thermostat opens, and in extreme climates different temperature ratings can be used to assist the vehicle in maintaining proper temperatures. In very hot desert climates for instance, a lower temperature rated thermostat may be preferred.

There are two types of thermostat failures:

Thermostat stuck open (most common): Coolant will flow through the engine constantly from cold, preventing the engine from reaching operating temperature. Usually this means a rich mixture resulting in poor fuel mileage and potential catalytic converter damage.

Thermostat stuck closed: If the thermostat is stuck closed it will restrict flow into the engine resulting in an overheating condition, resulting in potential catastrophic engine damage.

Engine Coolant Thermostat Failure Symptoms
  • Overheating engine
  • Engine not reaching optimal running temperature
  • Radiator fan not engaging

Thermastat
2006 MB E320 CDI thermostat and housing assembly. The housing had two 6mm holes that WERE NOT threaded (not tapped). One hole is for the front mounting bracket and the other is for securing fuel lines. This new trend of OVER PAY and UNDER deliver at FCP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this same exact unit can be purchased on other web sites for 30-45% less..........

Almost perfect
The thermostat housing is well made, and had no burrs or casting imperfections that I could find. The only thing I would've like to see was threads on the two bracket screw holes. Being aluminum, the bolts were able to self thread pretty easily, and I didn't see a need to actually tap new threads, but it would've been nice if it came threaded.

Thermostat
My '05 CDI had issues bringing engine temperature up even in Arizona 100+ heat (drove from CA to NC) so I knew thermostat was stuck open. After flushing coolant and replacing the part, I had zero issues. Highly recommended as well as FCP Euro for fast shipping.

'06 E320 CDI
This Wahler part was exactly what I needed to get my diesel back up to operating temperature (92 celcius) quickly. Getting a little better fuel mileage than before as well!

thermostat
Fit right on my OM648 CDI, none of the connections were threaded you may want to, so it’s essentially bolted on. However torqued spec and no leaks.

DIY Installation
I had a low raise of the engine temperature to a normal value. After replacing the thermostat everything is OK. This is a good quality part and easy to replace yourself.

WAH-41017492D MB Thermostat Housing
This is the second housing I've ordered, and it's apparently a Factory OEM model with the OEM MFR name & PN ground off, which is no biggy to me. However the top mounting boss is drilled but not tapped (no threads for the bracket that fastens to it. It's easier to tap it myself (off of the car) as opposed to trying to when it's installed. And even though it's a pain to have to do something like that to something that's new, it's easier for me to just tap it myself instead of going through the time, energy, and expense of getting a quality replacement.

Cooling system
When my temp gauge began to read only 1/2 normal I knew I needed a replacement. As others have stated you need a 6mm X1.00 tap as the 2 bolt locations are not threaded. Takes and extra 10 min.

Question Posted by a customer
Do I have to tap the holes where the fuel bracket mounts--If so dont you think you should note this in huge text so people are aware of this
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This is par for the course for any Mercedes cooling system component where a bracket or pulley attaches. The existing bracket fasteners will easily cut new threads in the thermostat housing, there is no need to use a tap on this material.
Question Posted by a customer
Is this a 92 degree Celsius thermostat?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, this is a 92C thermostat.
