Product Information

Engages and disengages the cooling fan between the radiator and engine

Fan clutches are responsible for engaging and disengaging the cooling fan that sits behind the radiator and in front of the engine block. Signs of a failed fan clutch includes loud fan noises from the engine bay while accelerating and failure to engage causing overheating conditions.

For easy removal of the fan clutch you will need a thin 36mm wrench and counter hold tool. FCP carries a special tool set for this repair, CTA-1059.

Engine Cooling Fan Clutch

An engine cooling fan clutch is a thermostatic device that controls the operation of the engine’s cooling fan based on temperature. It engages or disengages the fan depending on engine heat and air conditioning demand, reducing unnecessary drag on the engine when full cooling isn’t required. This helps improve fuel efficiency, reduce noise, and maintain proper engine temperature.

Engine Cooling Fan Clutch Failure Symptoms
  • Engine overheating, if the clutch fails to engage the fan when extra cooling is needed.
  • Excessive fan noise (“roaring” sound), if the clutch is stuck engaged and the fan runs at full speed all the time.

About Mahle Behr

Mahle Behr GmbH & Co. KG is a German corporation active in the automobile industry, headquartered in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. It is a specialist for automotive air conditioning and engine cooling systems. Mahle began in 1920 when pistons made of heavy gray cast iron were being used in internal combustion engines for automobiles and there was a need for a new design. The Mahle brothers countered this trend by producing light-alloy pistons at their small, newly established company however the technology was still finicky and problems come up frequently. They soon determined that they needed to come up with a solution to keep dirt and dust out of the engine so they eventually developed air and oil filters as well. Their perseverance paid off and the light-alloy pistons began to take over the market. Today, half of all automobiles produced worldwide contain MAHLE components. MAHLE offers an extensive range of parts for everyone including pistons, cylinder liners, piston ring sets, bearings, assemblies, valves, valve train components, and air, oil, fuel, and cabin air filters. Their catalog and online database of aftermarket engine components is an indispensable reference. In early 2016, Stuttgart-based MAHLE GmbH increased its holding in the Behr Group from 36.85 percent to approximately 51 percent with the acquisition of all shares in the BWK GmbH holding company. The company now goes by Mahle-Behr.

Leaky
I thought I was purchasing a German made OE style clutch based on the FCP description. The part showed up leaking fluid and with "made in china" on the box. I installed it but it has been leaking viscous fluid ever since install. I recommend spending the money on Sachs or Genuine.

Failure after a few months.
Fan clutch was leaking its oil from the piston behind the bi-metallic spring and has excessive play months after installing it. It would also not allow the fan to disengage at higher engine speeds which resulted in a damaged fan and shroud.

Leaked
Fan clutch leaked and was slinging fluid throughout radiator/fan shroud. Stick with Sachs which is stamped on the original part that came in the car
