Unfortunately they don't last forever and are considered to be a major wear item which must be replaced before they completely wear out and damage the brake rotor costing you more in repairs. Brake pads can be made of several materials such as a semi-metallic compound, ceramic compound, or organic. Brake pads are suggested to be checked frequently during oil changes or routine services for wear to ensure you have at least the minimum pad thickness as stated by the car manufacturer.

Sensor Issue
These pads are great, and I used these on my other vehicles, and I never had any issues until I put them on a Range Rover. After a maybe two years I got a warning light saying that my pads are ready for the replacement. I thought since it's a 5-ton SUV it eats through pads quicker, but it turns out that the Range Rover doesn't like the brake pad sensor that comes with these pads and it threw a fault. I bought the OE sensors all around separately, rewired them and no more issues.

Akebono LR4 Pads
I should have installed these from the beginning to replace the ridiculously dusty stock pads. I bought these pads along with the Zimmerman Rotors and what an upgrade!! It's been a week and no dust at all and great brake pedal feel. FWIW, I run Akebono/Zimmerman on my BMW too for the same reason, great pads, no to very little dust. Great Rotors as well.
