Jaguar A/C Condenser - Mahle Behr 351100751

Product Information

The A/C condenser is effectively a radiator for your vehicle's A/C system, designed to vent heat from the air conditioner's refrigerant. The A/C condenser is usually mounted to or near the main radiator in the front of the vehicle. Its function is to cool the high-pressure hot gas refrigerant coming from the compressor, condensing it back into a liquid. The cooled liquid leaves the condenser and flows through the A/C receiver drier on its way to the evaporator, where the evaporation process provides cool air to the cabin. A/C condensers are typically made completely out of aluminum and are fairly lightweight and delicate. Both sides of the A/C condenser are connected to the high and low-pressure pipes using bolted fittings and O-rings. Due to the high-pressure nature of the A/C system, even the most minor leak can cause complete A/C failure.

The most common reason for failure in A/C Condensers is from road debris, such as rocks or dirt, which causes punctures or bent fins. A punctured condenser will vent the refrigerant in the system, usually 134a, fairly quickly leading to immediate failure. Bent fins will not typically lead to condenser failure, but will reduce the effective cooling capacity due to reduced airflow.

Internal blockage is another common failure mode, mostly in older or higher-mileage vehicles that have not had regular A/C services. A blockage is usually caused by internal corrosion as a result of water accumulation in the system. The corrosion grows and clogs the narrow passages, leading to reduced efficiency and sometimes even cracks and leaks. Leaks can be hard to find, especially when the A/C condenser is peppered from thousands of miles of highway exposure. The best way to find a leak in your A/C system is to charge it with an oil containing reactive UV dye after a thorough engine bay cleaning, and running the air conditioning. If there is a leak, it will be easily viewed using a UV (black light) flashlight as a bright neon reflection.

• Internal blockage: If the A/C system is rarely or never serviced, the A/C receiver drier will become saturated and allow water that has made it into the system to circulate along with the refrigerant. Water and R134a combine to create a corrosive acid, which causes corrosion buildup in the narrow passageways of the A/C condenser and evaporator, reducing efficiency and sometimes causing the A/C to stop working altogether.
• External impact damage: The A/C Condenser is a lightweight aluminum assembly positioned right in the front of the car. It’s common to take a beating with prolonged high-speed miles, especially in the winter when the area uses rock salt on the roads. Even a pinhole leak is enough to eventually empty the A/C system, and leaks will not be readily identifiable without A/C dye.

About Mahle Behr

Mahle Behr GmbH & Co. KG is a German corporation active in the automobile industry, headquartered in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. It is a specialist for automotive air conditioning and engine cooling systems. Mahle began in 1920 when pistons made of heavy gray cast iron were being used in internal combustion engines for automobiles and there was a need for a new design. The Mahle brothers countered this trend by producing light-alloy pistons at their small, newly established company however the technology was still finicky and problems come up frequently. They soon determined that they needed to come up with a solution to keep dirt and dust out of the engine so they eventually developed air and oil filters as well. Their perseverance paid off and the light-alloy pistons began to take over the market. Today, half of all automobiles produced worldwide contain MAHLE components. MAHLE offers an extensive range of parts for everyone including pistons, cylinder liners, piston ring sets, bearings, assemblies, valves, valve train components, and air, oil, fuel, and cabin air filters. Their catalog and online database of aftermarket engine components is an indispensable reference. In early 2016, Stuttgart-based MAHLE GmbH increased its holding in the Behr Group from 36.85 percent to approximately 51 percent with the acquisition of all shares in the BWK GmbH holding company. The company now goes by Mahle-Behr.
