OE replacement wheel bearing and hub assembly

If your BMW sounds like it's humming as you travel down the highway then there is a good chance you need to replace your front wheel bearings. Unlike on some cars where a wheel bearing needs to be pressed in and out of the hub this assembly is a complete unit including the wheel hub and bearing pre-assembled. Per BMW it is absolutely vital to replace the mounting bolts when installing a new hub assembly

Please note: When installing a new wheel hub and bearing assembly on your E39 the wheel hub bolts must be replaced as they are one-time use only, please also order p/n 31221093427, 4 required.

Typically a wheel bearing is a set of steel balls within a metal ring, which is called a race. At the center of your wheels, there is a hollow piece of metal, called a hub. The wheel bearings resides inside the hub and helps to reduce friction when the wheel spins.

2001 525I Wheel hub/bearing assy

This part fit very nicely.
This job resulted from replacing the windshield washer motor. The job to install was a fairly straight forward, but a lot of dis-assembly to get the hubs in place. Been running for nearly a year without any issues. Feels great and were exact fit and replacement. I needed an 3/8" 18mm short socket to get one of the bolts off and back on (must have item, otherwise your removing the whole strut assembly). I used new mounting bolts, since the old ones are stretched from the torque. Reason for replacement was a broken lug bolt, I was unable to remove (broke several high quality easy-outs). The old hubs had 215K, so I thought they should be replaced anyway.

This is the exact part that the car came with except the BMW logo.
It would be foolish to try to save a few buck by using any other brand. The old ones weren't bad at 180K miles but I replaced them since I was doing a suspension overhaul. Thanks FCP!!

FAG front wheel bearings for 540i
The bearings I received were make by SK, and the hubs by FAG. Some people receive other brands, but they are all marketed under FAG. As long as it’s a name brand, you’re good. The ones I pulled off the car were KOYO brand and had served 180,000 miles. While they did not feel grindy/gritty, I had some front end vibration in the mornings and highway speed. While turning into the driveway, I also had a distinct “CLICK”, come from both sides. All of these issues have been solved by replacing the front and rear bearings. Note: I had also replaced every component of the suspension. These were not too bad to install. You will need to loosen the pinch bolt for the strut (paint mark in multiple places for alignment!!!), disconnect the sway bar end link, and push the knuckle down to give more clearance from the strut. All the bolts have red thread locker.. use a torch to heat up the bolt tip and spray penetrating fluid on also. Each bolt will most likely be a struggle. I cleaned each bolt and reapplied threadlocker.. BMW suggests you replace the bolts. Use antisieze on the clean mounting surface and the hub surface. While you’re in there, re-grease your caliper slide pins.
