Engine Coolant Thermostat

Thermostats are a simple device which regulates coolant flow through the engine. When cold it will stay closed, stopping coolant flow and helping the engine warm up faster. Once up to temperature, it will open and allow normal coolant flow and maintain proper engine temperature. Always install with the 'jiggle pin' bleed valve at 12 o'clock when possible.

For many applications, multiple temperature ratings are available. These ratings denote when the thermostat opens, and in extreme climates different temperature ratings can be used to assist the vehicle in maintaining proper temperatures. In very hot desert climates for instance, a lower temperature rated thermostat may be preferred.

There are two types of thermostat failures:

Thermostat stuck open (most common): Coolant will flow through the engine constantly from cold, preventing the engine from reaching operating temperature. Usually this means a rich mixture resulting in poor fuel mileage and potential catalytic converter damage.

Thermostat stuck closed: If the thermostat is stuck closed it will restrict flow into the engine resulting in an overheating condition, resulting in potential catastrophic engine damage.

Engine Coolant Thermostat Failure Symptoms
  • Overheating engine
  • Engine not reaching optimal running temperature
  • Radiator fan not engaging

About Mahle

Mahle began in 1920 when pistons made of heavy gray cast iron were being used in internal combustion engines for automobiles and there was a need for a new design. The Mahle brothers countered this trend by producing light-alloy pistons at their small, newly established company however the technology was still finicky and problems come up frequently. They soon determined that they needed to come up with a solution to keep dirt and dust out of the engine so they eventually developed air and oil filters as well. Their perseverance paid off and the light-alloy pistons began to take over the market. Today, half of all automobiles produced worldwide contain MAHLE components. MAHLE offers an extensive range of parts for everyone including pistons, cylinder liners, piston ring sets, bearings, assemblies, valves, valve train components, and air, oil, fuel, and cabin air filters. Their catalog and online database of aftermarket engine components is an indispensable reference.

MAHLE Aftermarket is the world’s leading manufacturer of more than 100,000 OE and aftermarket parts, including MAHLE gaskets, engine bearings, turbochargers, thermostats, pistons and piston rings, valves, engine air and fluid filters, heavy-duty engine components, and rotating electric components such as starters, electric motors, and alternators.

Thermostat
Good thermostat — no issues so far and an easy install. Originally, with the factory thermostat, I was getting some sporadic thermostat-monitoring fault codes, even though the car was never overheating. I think that's due to thermostats typically failing open. It’s been a few thousand miles since I installed this replacement, and the fault code never came back. Installation is very straightforward and doesn’t require draining or refilling the coolant since the thermostat sits on top of the engine. I used a turkey baster type tool to remove the coolant from the reservoir and put it back in after finishing the job. The only mildly annoying part of the job was removing the old thermostat from the housing once it was off the car. I won’t go into a full DIY write-up here, there are plenty of guides online, but it’s honestly pretty simple. Just make sure to also order the four O-rings for the two pipes that go into the housing. Some people mention being careful not to pinch or cut the O-rings on reinstallation; I took my time with that and had no problems.

Replace when you open the thermostat housing on higher mileage cars
I have 143k on my M3. I had a leak at the thermostat housing fittings so I cleaned it up and replaced the o rings. Even though my thermostat works just fine, the rubber seal for the thermostat was disintegrating. Had to order after the fact so be mindful when you open it up.

Thermostat
The thermostat i bought worked perfectly and solved the SES light, however, I almost could not complete the install because the suggested o rings i bought were too large and i could not compress them enough to align the hoses into position. Don't ruin your stock o rings when taking off your thermostat coolant hoses, as you may need them like I did. Ideally, the orings would be the right size, but just in case, dont be rash and ruin stock parts that may need to be reused.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by a customer
Does this part come with the o-rings/gaskets necessary for R&R. If not, are those o-rings and/or gaskets available via separate part number?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This includes the sealing o-ring for the thermostat as noted and pictured. Since this thermostat applies to the S85 and S65 engine some of the additional parts potentially needed for the thermostat housing are going to vary. We would need to know the year and model to provide further information.
