BMW S54 Valve Adjustment Shim Kit - Wiseco VSK4

Just did my valve adjustment and used this kit, I don't know the last time my valves were ever adjusted, if ever, and almost all the tolerances had loosened up. I actually ordered 3 based on other reviews saying there weren't enough, and ended up only using one although I did end up using all 3 of the 2.24mm shims, and several others. I would recommend buying two kits, or if you don't mind waiting buy 1 and then just buy any individual shims that remain and install those. I re-used many shims after measuring them, although I used digital calipers (and measured 3 times and zeroed after each measurement). I HIGHLY recommend if you do this and plan on re-using shims, get yourself a micrometer if you don't have one already. I promise it will save you a lot headache and gets you much more accurate readings, and would have saved me a lot of time, I didn't realize I could get a digital one for $55 at my local store as I thought they were far more expensive usually. I did measure them before installing the ones I used, and with the calipers it matched the sizing, but again a micrometer is far better. I do wish it was in .2mm increments at the very least and wouldn't mind paying more for a kit with those, but apparently even the genuine kit goes by these intervals so this is what we have.

As others said, there are not enough shims of the same size and you quickly run out. The shims themselves are not sized as they’re labeled, be sure to measure before installing to save yourself time. I had to keep trying shims before finding a good gap and it was due to the label and size mismatching. If there’s a set with more shims, I’d try that next.

The little box that the shims come in is very neatly done, and the shims themselves fit snugly into the slot they sit in. My only complaint is, as others have said here, there is not enough of each shim size to do the full job at all. I only had enough from one kit to do my intake side. Now I need to order another kit and go back to do the exhaust side at a later date. Having three of each size, when there is 24 valves and multiple ones take the same size shim, does not work out.

Shims measure accurately. However there are only three shims of each size. All my adjustments were centred around 2.12 to 2.28 so many of the sizes like 1.72 aren't even close. I ran out of 2.28mm - needed 1 mote. As most valves are the same/similar all need similar sizes and similar adjustments. Likely you'll need two sets of shims. Juggling them around doesn't really work either since steps of 0.04mm is about the 80% of the full minimum to maximum spec range. Also my set got smashed in one corner from international shipping - fortunately none escaped. Packing (including lots of other parts) wasn't the best.

Just completed valve adjustment on my E46 M3 using this kit. It worked great with one note: I only used like 3 or 4 of the sizes. Since there are only 4 of each size (and 24 valves) I had to find some of the used ones that were closer in size and reuse them on other valves. Not a problem but I ended up having to go through at least two full rotations to get enough swapped out to get the correct specs on certain valves. As a result I have a ton of unused sizes. Be sure to take notes on specs of each valve in case you need to go back!

Bought this as an alternative to the OE BMW one at a much higher expense. Came package very nicely and the shims are accurately sized (at least the ones I measured and used).
