BMW S54 Oil Pan and Oil Pump Upgrade Kit - 11137838130KT2

The S50B30 US engine is widely used in race, rally, and drift cars. One of the major issues with these engines is the scavenging of the factory oiling system. While this is not an issue for a road-driven car this is a major problem for vehicles that see high constant lateral loads. A drop in oil pressure or flow through the engine can quickly wipe out connecting rod bearings, main engine bearings, and camshafts resulting in severe engine damage or failure.

A common solution to this problem is to install a baffle into the factory oil pan. While the installation of an upgraded baffle can help alleviate oil starvation it's not the ultimate cure. This is when we turn to what BMW M GmbH did with the S54's oiling system. BMW spent a lot of time developing the pan and pickup design for the S54 to ensure a reliable wet-sump oiling system.

The S54 oil pan is a dual wet sump oil pan that features a duel pickup with a return pipe from the oil pan that constantly replenishes the rear sump with oil. This scavenging effect provided by this system helps the S54 maintain a constant oil supply to the engine under very extreme conditions.

The M50/M52/M54 family of engines allows for part interchangeability due to their similar design. The good news is the S54 oiling system can be installed on an M50, M52, or M54 engine without major modifications. The windage tray needs to be removed on these engines (or modified) to clear the dual-pickup brackets. It is also highly recommended to safety wire the oil pump nut to the sprocket. FCP Euro also offers a retrofit option for installing the oil pump chain tensioner which also ensures the oil pump chain does not have as much of an effect loosening the oul pump sprocket nut.
