550x423x40, a critical component of your BMW's cooling system

BMW radiators are notorious for developing leaks in the end tanks with age. A leaking radiator can easily cause a catastrophic cooling system failure potentially resulting in costly engine damage. When replacing a damaged or leaking radiator we recommend inspecting and replacing the upper and lower radiator hose to ensure a long service life with proper cooling system performance.

BMW and FCP specifically recommends Genuine BMW coolant when servicing your cooling system, BMW part number 82141467704.

Radiator

Your radiator is an integral, and arguably, the most important part of the cooling system. It is designed to expel heat from the coolant via the small fins. Most radiators fail when the end tanks crack causing leaks, but higher mileage radiators which have missing or bent fins often are clogged up with debris which can also cause overheating issues as the radiator cannot expel heat effectively. If your radiator is in rough shape we recommend replacing it. We also highly recommend inspecting/replacing the upper and lower radiator hose at that time.

Radiator Failure Symptoms
  • Overheating
  • Coolant Leak
  • Cracking
  • Bent Fins
  • Clogged Fins caused by debris

OEM Replacement
This fits just like OEM. Bought this for my '00 Z3 instead of the BMW radiator when I broke the expansion tank return-line nipple. Just be sure to take the rectangular rubber bits where the radiator clips fit into place off the old radiator because this does not come with new ones.

Fits and performs as expected, make sure to transfer rubber pieces over
This radiator works as expected on my 1998 BMW M Roadster. One piece of advice that I would give is to transfer over 4 rubber pieces on the old radiator onto this one, as the new radiator didn't come with this pieces and was not fitting properly without them. These 4 rubber pieces include 2 pieces on the bottom of each side of the radiator, and 2 on top, which the radiator clips go into.

So far, so good.
This rad fit my '99 Z3 2.8 just like OE. Time will tell how long it holds up. From frequenting forums, it seems that some premature failures of plastic cooling system parts are caused by over filling. The expansion tank needs headroom for the coolant to expand. I run mine near the Min. level to absorb the expansion of the coolant. Air is compressible, liquid, not so much.

Nissens 60638
This Nissens radiator is nicely made but is designed for the 99-02 standard Z3's fitted with the BMW 17101715319 radiator. It will not fit correctly on the 97-98 Z3's or 98-00 M Z's being that it has a wider core than the earlier 6 cylinder radiator 1711427165. With the fan shroud pushed closer to the engine and very little clearance between the fan blade and shroud, the blade will hit the shroud especially as it flexes in higher revolutions. This will eventually distort the blade.

Fit perfectly
Had no issues fitting this aftermarket radiator in my 1999 Z3 2.3. Fan shroud slid in perfectly.

Shroud won’t sit flush
The top of the fan shroud will not sit flush against this radiator. I had to stretch the plastic tab over to clip onto the radiator and am lucky it didn’t break. The OEM radiator has clearance for the upper expansion tank hose while this one has the hose pinched between the shroud and the fins. It’s a small difference, but the gap does not look OEM and knocks at least one star off. I would still pick this over OEM at 3x the cost.

Almost Perfect
Original radiator from my 99 M Coupe finally cracked at the upper neck and exploded coolant everywhere. My previous OE radiator was Valeo but it seems they no longer make radiators for my vehicle so this was my only viable option. Looks great and fit perfectly into position. Was surprised at how much gunk and debris got stuck on the front side of the old radiator. My only issue was that one of the upper fan shroud alignment tabs has a hard time sliding onto the new radiator but with a little elbow grease, the shroud now seats well on the radiator. Be sure to buy a new coolant temp sensor and washer as it is not guaranteed that the old one will fit into the Nissens.

Nissens Radiator
Replaced my OEM radiator in a 2000 M Roadster with 130K miles. I decided to go with the cheaper Nissens because the reviews were great, they make OEM for a lot of car manufacturers, and FCP gives a lifetime warranty. Installed quickly with no issues and works perfectly. I plan on keeping the M Roadster for a long time so this was an easy decision.

Radiator
I bought this radiator while doing a coolant system overhaul. Perfect fit and seems to be working great
