Manual transmission drain and fills are the easiest service you can provide your manual transmission. Doing so will greatly improve the service life and performance of the transmission. Old fluid can cause numerous performance issues such as notchiness , grinding between shifts, and even mis-shifts.

It is best to service your M3's transmission every 40,000 miles for the best service life and best long term performance of your manual transmission.

Manual Transmission Fluid

Manual transmission fluid is a specialized lubricant used in a manual gearbox to facilitate smooth gear shifting by reducing friction between the moving parts; when it fails, common symptoms include difficulty shifting gears, gear slipping, grinding noises, rough shifting, fluid leaks, and a burning smell, often indicating excessive wear or contamination within the transmission.

Manual Transmission Fluid Failure Symptoms
  • Difficult shifting: Gears may feel hard to engage or require excessive force to shift
  • Gear slipping: The engine RPMs increase without the car accelerating properly, indicating the gears are not fully engaging

E9X M3 Trans fluid
This is in regard to the E9X M3, not sure if other BMWs have a transmission pump. The transmission service kits here include 2 liters of fluid, which is just enough if you don’t activate the transmission pump. Without running the pump, about 0.5 liters of old fluid stays trapped in the system. Some people say that’s not a big deal, but if you have access to ISTA+, it’s very easy to activate the pump and drain that remaining fluid — that way you’re replacing 100% of the fluid instead of roughly 80%. If you do use ISTA+ to activate the pump during the drain, make sure to run it again after refilling, which allows you to add roughly 0.5 liters more to bring the system up to full capacity. If you go this route, buy an extra 1L bottle. Steps: Drain to empty, activate pump bringing fluid to true empty, refill, active pump again, top off remaining 0.5L.

missing washer
Redline MTL fluid is great. The kit itself is the issue. It's missing a crush washer that is supposed to be used for the transmission filter piece. It's included in the OEM kit but not in this one. I didn't realize this until later when the fluid started to leak out. Ended up having to buy additional fluid followed by the washer at my local BMW dealership. This kit should be fixed...

remember to add in the transmission filter washer which IS NOT included even though this is a full kit

Unsure
It was nice to get the dirty brown fluid out at 52k miles. The filter was clean upon removal. The shifts overall are smoother but 1st and 2nd are a little notchier. I am located in Sothern California so cold temps aren't the issue. I will flush again and see if it improves, if not I'll flush it with OEM.

BMW Manual Trans Service Kit (E90 E92 E93 M3) - Red Line
Still feeling it out since I haven't driven the car a lot since changing the stock trans fluid with this. The short amount of driving I've done makes it seem good though!
