Comprehensive kit featuring 1-Series M and M3 control arms, direct swap for your non M E82/E88 1-series and Non M E90/E91/E92/E93 3-series

The E82 1-Series M and E90/E92/E93 M3 received different control arms than their non M counterparts. With the exception of shock absorbers, strut assemblies, and springs these control arms vary in several ways and are a critical part of what makes the 1M and M3 handle differently. Below is a comparison of the front and rear control arm suspensions and how the vary.

The front control arms set up is identical in the fact that it features two tension struts and two lower wish bones. However, that's where the similarities end. The control arm design themselves is what makes the difference. The tension struts (big curved control arms) feature a solid rubber inner bushing which reduces deflection and eliminates the hydro bushing weakness which is tearing and leaks. The solid rubber bushing is stiffer which helps tighten up the front suspension without being overly stiff and unforgiving. The lower wishbones (straight control arm) features a sealed inner bearing, also known as a monoball, that allows for the inner part of the control arm to rotate more freely when compared to the non M rubber bushing. This design change also allows for added durability in the long run. The lower control arm is slightly longer which adds approximately .75° of negative camber helping reduce under steer and drastically improving turn in response without having a significant impact on tire read life.

The rear control arm suspension is drastically different on the E9X M3 and E82 1 Series M when compared to their non M counterparts. The non M upper control arms are rolled steel and feature traditional rubber bushings in both the inner and outer position. The "hollow" design of the OE control arms are weak and flex a lot, particularly under acceleration. The M3 version of these upper control arms are made of solid aluminum and are light in comparison to the non M variants. Similar to the front wishbone, the upper wishbones use a monoball mount which allows for free movement of the control arms under all conditions. This helps keep the suspension stable and planted under all conditions.

I bought this for my 2007 bmw sedan that had 130,000 miles on it at the time. I also replaced the tie rods with Lemforder brand, which is the OEM supplier. I followed the DIY's on the various forums. You absolutely will need an alignment after this project. I also used brand new M3 replacement bolts as well. An Air gun and some Kroil oil is an absolute must for those that live in a northern state and use salt on the roads, during the winter months. You will need to file down the inner socket of the subframe where TRW-JTC1426 & TRW-JTC1427 attach to the car. These parts are slightly too wide for the subframe attachment points. This is a point of discussion on almost every DIY in various BMW forums out there. All I can say is car is a complete joy to drive again and is much better than it was when it was brand new. The steering wheel is M3 stiff. You barely have to move the steering wheel on the hwy for example. You can really feel the car just hug the road. Going around S curves is just plain fun.

Some of the reviewers above may have been rewarded for their positive & negative reviews. We don't hold anything back.
