Product Information

Referred to as a wishbone by BMW, connects the rear wheel carrier to the rear subframe

This upper wishbone connects the rear wheel spindle to the subframe. The inner bushings can wear out with high mileage causing performance loss as well as sounds from the rear suspension. We recommend replacing these control arms in pairs for the best service life, performance, and safety.

Suspension Control Arm

Control arms are crucial link in a vehicle's suspension connecting the suspension to a vehicle's subframe. These pieces are usually hinged to allow for suspension to travel and articulate as the vehicle rides over obstructions in the road and while the vehicle turns. Many vehicles such as those with independent suspensions have multiple links and feature several connection points and arms to offer better ride quality and comfort.

As bushings and joints in a control arm begin to wear you may notice a looseness feel in your suspension. And while many arms have replaceable and serviceable individual components, many still require the replacement of the entire arm. Below are signs of when a replacement control arm may be needed:

Suspension Control Arm Failure Symptoms
  • Play in suspension joints where these arms meet the subframe and/or knuckle
  • Buckling noise emanating from the suspension
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Inability to properly align vehicle
  • Shutter or vibration coming from the steering wheel at highway speed
  • Wandering or pulling sensation from side to side felt on the steering wheel

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Jason
Follow-up question. My understanding, from the first post at https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1781245, and from the parts diagram, at https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=VA93-USA-06-2007-E90-BMW-M3&diagId=33_1416, is that the inner connection at the subframe is a ball joint, and the outer connection at the wheel carrier is a bushing. Do I understand correctly? Would I use the Lemforder spherical bearing at https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-trailing-arm-spherical-bearing-set-fcp-euro-33326763092sm for the outer wheel carrier connection? If I do use the Lemforder spherical bearing, would I need a spacer, to match the dimensions of the stock control arm?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
BMW calls this type of bushing a ball joint. The connection is not actually a traditional ball joint, however. No spacer is needed with that item. You are welcome to follow up with service@fcpeuro.com if you have any additional questions.
Question Posted by Jason
Does this part have inner ball joint connecting to subframe, and outer bushing connecting to wheel carrier? Can you recommend a spherical bearing to replace the bushing? Thank you!
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
These connect to the subframe at inner with the "joint" bushings shown installed in the images. We do offer a monoball upgrade set here: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-trailing-arm-spherical-bearing-set-fcp-euro-33326763092sm
