Product Information

Intercoolers typically reduce the temperature of the air that has been pressurized by a turbo or supercharger. That pressurized, cool air is ideal for performance as more fuel can be mixed and thus more horsepower created. As a result any leak in the intercooler itself will greatly degrade performance as the system will not be able to maintain the needed pressure. One way to check for an intercooler system leak is to spray soapy water on the system as the car runs. Wherever you see bubbles forming you have a leak.

Intercooler

An intercooler is a heat exchanger used in turbocharged or supercharged engines to cool the compressed air before it enters the engine’s intake manifold.

Purpose:

  • Reduce air temperature: Compressed air from the turbo or supercharger heats up; cooler air is denser and contains more oxygen, which improves combustion efficiency.
  • Improve engine performance: Cooler, denser air allows more fuel to burn, increasing power.
  • Protect the engine: Reduces the risk of knocking and excessive thermal stress.

Intercoolers can be air-to-air (uses ambient air to cool the compressed air) or air-to-liquid (uses a coolant or water). They are typically mounted in front of the radiator or in a dedicated location in the engine bay.

Intercooler Failure Symptoms
  • Reduced Engine Power or Boost: Leaks or blockages prevent the engine from receiving properly compressed, cooled air.
  • Hissing or Whistling Noise: Air escaping from cracks or loose connections under boost produces noticeable sounds.
  • Increased Intake Air Temperature: Engine may run hotter, reducing performance and efficiency.

Question Posted by Matthew
What is the difference between Nissens and Mahle Behr intercooler other than the price
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Behr would be the OE version for this unit and the Nissens would be an aftermarket option. Both are quality units, however Behr does make the original version.
