Product Information

BMW’s switch to turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection created the first European straight-six capable of taking on the Japanese. The N54 engine was an instant hit among tuners, and big hp builds have populated the forums and Instagram posts ever since. Any N54 can have Hellcat-hunting-horsepower with the right parts, including those that don’t directly contribute to the power figures. Keeping your BMW engine cool is essential for reliable, maximum performance, as overheating it typically means an expensive repair. If you want to hurt feelings in a sleeper 335i or put down consistent fast laps around Lime Rock Park in a 135i, you should consider fitting the all-aluminum CSF 7046 radiator.

Upgrading The BMW N54 With A CSF 7046 Radiator

The E90 335i, E82 135i, and E89 Z4 sDrive35i are incredibly capable platforms. Their interchangeability of suspension components and highly-developed chassis make them potent competitors in motorsport. With so much high-performance potential, you must keep the engine safe as each drive gets more aggressive. Upgrading the OE N54 radiator to the CSF 7046 is an easy way to prevent the damage caused by overheating, like warped cylinder heads and seized bearings.

CSF BMW N54 Radiator Features

  • All-aluminum tank and core

  • CNC-machined OE quick connect fittings

  • 42mm 2-Row, Triple-pass core

  • CSF-exclusive “B-tube” design

  •  Ultra-efficient fins with 6.5mm fin height and multi-louvered design

  • CNC-machined Brackets

  • Drop-in fit requires no modification for install

The all-aluminum construction eliminates the plastic tanks for better cooling efficiency, although the revised core put in most of the work. The 2-row, triple-pass core is thicker than the OE and forces the coolant to stay in the radiator for longer, allowing the B-shaped tubes and ultra-efficient fins to pull the heat out of any N54's cooling system. The B-shaped tubes are the real magic; made from a thinner and more efficient material, the funky shape design improves heat transfer by 15% over the standard tube. Put that performance together with its drop-in fit that doesn’t require any modification, and you get the easiest reliability modification you can make.

Stick with OEM
While this radiator does it's job, and can keep the engine cool even under track conditions, it's not worth the hassles that come along with it if you daily drive your BMW. I installed this and immediately noticed the issues with the car struggling to warm up, and causing it to throw thermostat codes which had me chasing issues that didn't exist. Secondly, and the primary reason I bought this radiator over the OEM one, is that it is all aluminum construction and one should be able to assume it would last significantly longer than the plastic end tanks found on the OEM one, right? Well mine developed a leak within about 3 years of use, even faster than the OEM radiator went! In addition to the leak and the codes issues, the hose connections never quite fit right for the AT connection and that connection leaked (albeit a small amount, but steady) throughout my entire ownership. After I found the major leak, I decided to switch back to the OEM radiator as this junk was not worth the hassles and the extra cost.

Great radiator but short service life
My CSF aluminum radiator recently began to leak and needs to be replaced. It lasted 2.5 years / 14,000 miles. This is my 2nd CSF radiator—the first one lasted 3.5 years / 25,000 miles. I originally upgraded to an aluminum radiator to avoid the cracking of plastic radiators, to improve engine cooling, and because aluminum parts lasts much longer than plastic, but in my particular experience the CSF aluminum radiators seem as vulnerable to failing as the plastic ones. Both of mine failed at the point on the radiator where the core tubes attach to the side assemblies. These are very sturdy and nicely-made radiators, and they do very well at keeping the engine cooler than a stock radiator, but if only their service life would match.

Keeps engine TOO cool
As other users have mentioned, make sure it’s not rubbing on the condenser and if it’s under 60F the engine won’t get up to temp without blocking off the radiator. Pretty annoying because it WILL throw a check engine light then when clearing the codes it will get rid of your OBD readiness. Pretty annoying if you have to do emissions testing in the winter. Also drain plug oring came damaged from the factory but still holds fluid. But if you let the car idle for 5-10 minutes during the cold months or this is a hard use car, definitely keeps the temps down. Just know what you’re getting into as this is NOT an OE replacement.

Better than oem.
So my oem rad started leaking on the plastic tanks. Replaced it with this CSF. Fitments was good. Radiator fan shrouding may have some small gaps, maybe due to my hand labor, but it works and cools overall. Had a CSF product on my fiest ST and really liked the brand so i gave it a shot with the n55 as well.

Solution for leaking end tanks.
Do not fuss with any other brand. I have a 2011 335ix auto and this went in just about as hard as expected. Definitely a tight fit but so was the old radiator. Just be patient and watch the FCP video on how to install.

Fitment and longevity
Fitment is fair, what I found to have issues with are the bolt holes, and my stock intercooler would hit, but if you have issues with it rubbing on the intercooler that’s because the intercooler you are using won’t clear the radiator, I’ve had it now for 2 years with zero issues ever even cold weather I have no issues, all my e9X generation cars will be getting this CSF radiator!

Not suitable for daily drivers
As mentioned in another review, mine also started leaking at the bottom right corner after 4 years. I’ve decided not to claim the lifetime parts warranty for these reasons: 1. The leak is caused by a fitment issue (it rubs against the turbo-side intercooler piping), so even a replacement would likely develop the same problem. 2. For 4 years, during winter, I couldn’t drive with the heater on because if I did, my water and oil temperatures would never reach 100°C. 3. Installing and removing this radiator has been a nightmare—the radiator is too thick and the space available is far too limited. I would not recommend this radiator for a daily driver. It’s frustrating to realize that the part was really intended for off-road racing, not long-term everyday use. When I bought it, I thought it would be the last radiator I’d ever need, but that hasn’t been the case. I’m discarding this unit and replacing it with a genuine BMW radiator instead.

Does not fit convertible (e88)
Nothing wrong with the CSF design. It's just too thick for a convertible. The convertible cars have an extra structural bracing along the front side that runs across the body close to the radiator. And because of that brace, it makes the lower hoses kink and not fit in properly.

Worked well until it didn't
Worked well for my slightly modified e90 -335i. There were some fitment issues as far as the fan mounts, angle of the upper hose connectors, just some of the alignment issues was slightly skewed [china?]. Then I started weeping coolant when parked. After removing the fan and undertray, and refilling the coolant tank i can clearly see the tank has a leak in the lower right [us-passenger side] and the lower 5 or so tubes. Car hasn't had any impacts or rough driving, however it did work for quite some time. Slow to warm up some winters, however if your fan and thermostat is working well YMMV. Trying to decide do I go with a local plastic 'replace me every 2 years ' or send $$$ for another CSF .. From my experience this radiator does help the car run cooler, however it's not necessarily more durable [and it's not as easily available] as the 'plastic' factory style replacement. IF you track you car you may need this . Good luck . Hope this helps your decision.

Nice
Full aluminum cast radiator. I usually dont like chinese products but sometimes they can make high quality if you pay enough I guess. S

Question Posted by Nathan
If i order this for my 2013 335i n55 can i use the same oem hoes more to be specific the ones on the bottom that screw out for the transmission cooling on the oem plastic one and screw them into this one?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, on the supported E9X 335i automatic/DCT applications, this CSF radiator is designed to work with the factory-style quick-connect hoses and lower cooler connections. For a 2013 335i, this applies to the E9X coupe/convertible, but not the F30 sedan.
Question Posted by Mark
Where can I get new o-rings for the drain plug?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Unfortunately, the replacement part number for the orings nor drain plug are listed by CSF

Does the plastic expansion tank need to be replaced with an aluminum tank as well for this upgraded radiator?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
No, it is recomended but not a must, the plastic expansion tank is compatible still to this radiator.
Question Posted by Salvador
Is this a cross or downflow radiator?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This is a cross-flow radiator.
Question Posted by Javier
Do I need to purchase more than 1 gallon of coolant for this radiator?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
A gallon would be more than enough.
Question Posted by Victor
Do I need to buy anything extra with this radiator to make it fit to my stock n54 ? Do I need new o rings and or couplings etc etc ?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
No, you do not. O-rings would be related to their respective hoses. To be thorough, you could opt to replace the o-rings or the hoses completely.
Question Posted by Miguel
Does the csf radiator come with a drain plug and if not will the oem drain plug fit?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, this radiator has a drain plug on the bottom of the left side end tank.
Question Posted by a customer
Does this fit with the VTT silicone hose upgrade ?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes. VTT hoses have quick disconnect couplers that are factory style quick disconnects but made out of billet aluminum instead of plastic.
