Keeps your E39 wagon hatch open, 2 per car

If you have ever been hit in the head with a wagon hatch you already know how painful it is. Part of the advantage of owning a wagon over a sedan is easy access to the storage area in the back. However, the pressurized gas struts are what keep the hatch open and when these struts fail it can be nearly impossible to safe load and unload the trunk of your wagon. Don't mess around with your safety and replace the gas struts with this OEM replacement.

Liftgate Lift Support

Liftgate supports, or gas struts, are pressurized cylinders designed to hold up a liftgate or rear hatch. Over time, they can fail due to a pressure drop, often caused by exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, or contaminants. Cold weather, in particular, can reduce the gas pressure inside the struts, making them less effective at supporting the gate during cooler conditions.

  • The hatch may feel heavier or fail to stay open as high as before due to a gas leak in the lift support
  • Grease or oil leaking from the existing shocks

Perfect!
Perfect fit on 2001 530i Touring. Had seen on YouTube they can be fiddly and a pain to fit, but was surprisingly easy. Getting the plastic trim pieces off and back on the hinges with the wiring looms was almost more annoying than actually swapping the struts. I can HIGHLY recommend a long-ish pry bar for popping the ball joint off and on, but took much less force than I thought it would, could probably get away with a big flat blade screwdriver. When installing, get the new strut in and lined up and then put the large pin on the close side half in first, then you can gently raise the strut up with the pry bar underneath, then slightly sideways to position the strut on the ball joint up the enclosed end. Then pin all the way through. Then gently apply force down onto strut with pry bar/screwdriver and the ball joint pops on.

Hatch isn't falling on me anymore!
My old struts were in BAD shape. The springs were broken in two on both sides, and it was creaking and getting hung up when I'd open the hatch. Occasionally it would fall down too... fun! Now with these, it practically opens itself... much better!

They just work!
Unlike the pair I bought from a dealer a year ago, these are strong and consistent. I suspect the dealer's had simply aged out, but it was a bit frustrating to have to replace them so soon. The factory "new" ones didn't hold the hatch up in cold weather on a slight incline.

Very happy with these. I can finally leave my hatch open without worrying about it falling under it's own weight.

Brings back convenience
I finally can use the hatch without risking head injuries! I used a thin 15 inch Pry Bar to pop out and push in the spring inside the roof. You can push the hatch further to install the other side easily.

Fitment on our website is listed for US models only. The 530i was never sold as a wagon here. I do confirm that this lift support fits all E39 wagons regardless of submodel.
