Product Information

A common source of cooling system leaks and failures, includes coolant level sensor

Your BMW's expansion tank gives coolant a space to expand and contract as it goes through temperature changes. This tank is subjected to tremendous pressure and extreme heating and cooling cycles. This of course can cause cracks which result in coolant leaks. If your expansion tank is showing signs of leaks it must be replaced immediately.

Engine Coolant Reservoir

The engine coolant reservoir, also known as an ‘overflow bottle’ is a crucial component of modern vehicle cooling systems. Its job is to capture the increased volume of engine coolant that is created as the coolant is heated and expands. It needs someplace to go, so a coolant line that typically runs from the radiator outlet to the top of the engine coolant reservoir will feed the reservoir, while the reservoir feeds the engine as it needs more coolant to send through the engine and back through the radiator.

Engine coolant reservoirs are typically made of plastic and can be either clear or opaque. Some performance or aftermarket overflow bottles are made of aluminum or other more durable materials.

Engine Coolant Reservoir Failure Symptoms
  • Fogging: Over time, due to chemical exposure, age, and heat cycles, the clear plastic used in most engine coolant reservoirs can become foggy and opaque. This can make it difficult to read the coolant level accurately.
  • Leaks/ Cracking: The most common area for an engine coolant reservoir to leak is usually at a plastic seam or seal. As the bottle is run through thousands of heat cycles, from ambient temperatures below freezing to 200 degrees Fahrenheit plus, the weakest part of the reservoir, usually a seam or molded junction, can crack and fail.
  • Age: Over time, due to age and exposure, the plastic and materials will become brittle and prone to cracking and other age-related failures.
  • Coolant leaks: The most common failure of a bad engine coolant reservoir is a coolant leak. This can be slow or minimal, or it can be a total instant failure of the reservoir. If you notice a slow coolant leak and can diagnose it back to the overflow bottle, or coolant reservoir, it is recommended to replace it asap.
  • Overheating: A bad engine coolant reservoir can reduce engine cooling system pressure, reducing the effective boiling point of the engine coolant. Depending on temperatures and conditions, this can result in engine overheating.

About Mahle Behr

Mahle Behr GmbH & Co. KG is a German corporation active in the automobile industry, headquartered in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. It is a specialist for automotive air conditioning and engine cooling systems. Mahle began in 1920 when pistons made of heavy gray cast iron were being used in internal combustion engines for automobiles and there was a need for a new design. The Mahle brothers countered this trend by producing light-alloy pistons at their small, newly established company however the technology was still finicky and problems come up frequently. They soon determined that they needed to come up with a solution to keep dirt and dust out of the engine so they eventually developed air and oil filters as well. Their perseverance paid off and the light-alloy pistons began to take over the market. Today, half of all automobiles produced worldwide contain MAHLE components. MAHLE offers an extensive range of parts for everyone including pistons, cylinder liners, piston ring sets, bearings, assemblies, valves, valve train components, and air, oil, fuel, and cabin air filters. Their catalog and online database of aftermarket engine components is an indispensable reference. In early 2016, Stuttgart-based MAHLE GmbH increased its holding in the Behr Group from 36.85 percent to approximately 51 percent with the acquisition of all shares in the BWK GmbH holding company. The company now goes by Mahle-Behr.

Don’t do it
As a new first time customer, I’m thoroughly disappointed. Ordered this one week ago, with hopes for it to arrive express delivery in 2 days. I still have not received this, and customer service has given me the run around every single day, promising dispatch and delivery for the following day. One week of the same story, with no progress. Order at your own risk.

I only got 30K miles out of it
I'm buying it again because of the warranty but what a piece of garbage. It cracked after 30K miles. Mahle Behr used to be a good name to me...not anymore.

Genuine BMW OWM but Made in China
I rated this product 3 stars because FCPEuro provided excellent support throughout the process. This part carries a premium price as it’s an OEM component, which is why I chose it. However, after installation, the low coolant warning remained on even though the tank was full. I removed the tank, tested the sensor with a magnet, and confirmed the sensor was fine. Proceeded to install it again and the same low coolant warning came back on. This meant only one thing, the tank’s internal magnets were defective. I called FCPEuro who promptly sent a replacement. Before installing the replacement tank, I tested it along with the sensor: flip the tank so the float rises to the top (now bottom), then use a multimeter to check connectivity across the two leads. It’s a simple electrical loop that closes when the float and magnet reach the top. The new tank passed the test, so I installed it, and everything worked perfectly. Testing the old tank (after uninstalling it) confirmed the magnets were defective. Unfortunately, this cost me two days of labor and frustration, one can of coolant concentrate ($40), all because I assumed an OEM part would pass QA tests—I was wrong, just another Made in China product. Tip: Test the tank before installation. It will save you time and trouble.

Poor Part Quality
After having had two of these fail via cracking/leaks (one catastrophically in a parking lot 50 miles away from home) after about 20k miles, I've switched back to the official BMW part. The original lasted almost 100k miles, so the math doesn't work out with this part even with the lower cost. Wish BMW had engineered the metal lock clip to be on the visible side of the pipe/unit--what a pain to do over and over again!

Only Leaving This Review Because I'm Back to Buy Another
Pretty much what the subject line says. I got 22 months out of this one. First one cracked in the middle of one of the walls of the tank. This one is cracked at the seam/lip where the lid meets one of the sides of the tank. Lifetime Replacement from FCP Euro and the fact that it's an easy job to replace make it just another quirk of owning a BMW.

Good enough
Lasted 6 years and 40k miles before it started leaking from the seam.

Definition of insanity
Definition of insanity is doing it over and over again and expect different results, yet, here I am, buying this Behr tank reservoir that I know will burst on my again...this is the second replacement....if I manufacture such crap I'd be outta business.

Has some of the fiberglass showing, likely just cosmetic. Replace this when doing the water pump
This one had some of the fiber showing on the top edge the the Original didn't have. I bet that the company sells the perfect ones to BMW and brands these with the "cosmetic defect" as theirs. The Original one split right on the side of the tank at 150k miles. Since there was no fiber showing where the Original one failed, I just installed it instead of making a fuss about getting a replacement since the car was down with out this part. If you are doing a water pump replacement on N55 you should also replace this and the plastic hose from the head so you don't waste coolant down the line. These plastics seem to all fail at the same time.

Mahle Bahr Expansion Tank
I've had more than one of these expansion tanks fail on my 2012 X5M. This one from Mahle Behr lasted 2 1/2 years, I'm glad it has a lifetime replacement warranty. The original BMW brand failed too, I was hoping that another brand would be better.....
