Product Information

Basic front control arm kit for E70 X5's and E71 X6's

This is a basic front suspension refresh kit for non M X5 and X6 models. The E70, E71, and E72 X5 and X6 models have a true upper and true lower front axle setup. Generally speaking, the upper control arm which attaches to the top of the wheel carrier is pretty robust and not an issue. The lower control arms which feature the tension strut and lower wishbone are generally speaking the control arms that are going to wear the fastest. This basic kit comes with what you need to properly service the front lower control arms of your BMW X5 or BMW X6.

We recommend replacing all of your components if you have in excess of 80K miles and still have original components. We also encourage that you replace your control arm components if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Popping, clunking, or clicking sounds while traveling over bumps or dips in the road
  • A disconnected feeling between the steering wheel and front end of the car
  • Vehicle is slow to respond to steering inputs
  • Vehicle wanders on the highway or will not drive straight
  • Vehicle cannot be aligned properly due to play in front suspension
Suspension Control Arm Kit

Control arms are crucial link in a vehicle's suspension connecting the suspension to a vehicle's subframe. These pieces are usually hinged to allow for suspension to travel and articulate as the vehicle rides over obstructions in the road and while the vehicle turns. Many vehicles such as those with independent suspensions have multiple links and feature several connection points and arms to offer better ride quality and comfort.

As bushings and joints in a control arm begin to wear you may notice a looseness feel in your suspension. And while many arms have replaceable and serviceable individual components, many still require the replacement of the entire arm. Below are signs of when a replacement control arm may be needed.

Suspension Control Arm Kit Failure Symptoms
  • Play in suspension joints where these arms meet the subframe and/or knuckle
  • Buckling noise emanating from the suspension
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Inability to properly align vehicle
  • Shutter or vibration coming from the steering wheel at highway speed
  • Wandering or pulling sensation from side to side felt on the steering wheel

Great kit
This is the perfect way to refresh the front end on an E70. Got rid of clunking, sloppiness, and even some brake pulsation. Don't forget to align the car afterwards though.

Good kit could be great!
Almost complete kit. I ordered the 2 missing 27mm combo nuts for a total of 10 nuts as suggested by earlier review. I should have ordered the 6 replacement bolts for the whole job. Maybe order a bunch of the plastic rivets for the wheel well/fender. Job should’ve been easier to drill out those rivets and remove the wheel covers. Getting the tension struts out was much easier when pushing the ball joint studs out from nut side of the steering knuckles. Only one position for the ball joint will allow the tension strut to literally fall out. Install and torque the control arm 21mm bolts/lock nuts first before installing the tension strut for better access. Note: 27mm or 1-1/6” 12pt open box wrench is required to tighten the ball joints while holding the screw stud with a 6mm Allen key. Don’t use any large head racheting 12pt wrench. It won’t fit in the steering knuckle. Final torque with 27mm socket 165Nm / 122 ft-lb. All torque specs are in the Q&A. : )

Solid kit
The parts in the kit are almost all you need to address the lower control arm issues. I would agree, it would be nice if the kit included the bushing bolts and nuts to replace those coming off the vehicle. Yes, they can be reused, but it's not ideal. FCP Euro would do well to include these and bump the price accordingly. One is not going to complain about $10US after purchasing a kit like this.

BMW 4-Piece Control Arm Kit (E70 E71) - E70CAKIT
Great kit comes with everything you need. After install most vibration and old noises were gone. X5 handles better and is smoother over humps and bumps. Get Sway bar links also a very cheap replacement.

2011 X5 E70 35i
The parts are top notch as others have stated. The problem is that the "kit" is incomplete. The two thrust arms each come with a combo nut (BMW part no. 31126780480) that is included in the Lemforder package; however, the control arms do not. A total of four combo nuts are needed (BMW part no. 31126780480). The nuts are one-time use and you'll definitely need new ones. I had to run across town to the dealership to buy two. Also as a FYI, the four suspension control arm nuts listed in the kit (BMW part no. 3306787062) supersede the actual nuts listed for the vehicle (BMW part no. 33306760349). The dealership was able to explain this to me by showing me the production dates of the nuts; however, before they did, FCP did send out the four -60349 nuts to me. To be clear, you'll need a total of eight nuts: two 33326760668, four 33306760349 (or 33306787062), and four 31126780480 (two come with the thrust arms). The wrench sizes for the bolts and nuts are 18mm, 21mm, and 27mm (12pt).

Quality made control arms. Identical to the originals except for the BMW letters.

Nice kit quality, but missing pieces
Kit comes with needed arms and some (although not all) hardware you should replace when doing this job. It is missing two of the large nuts that attach to the conical side of the lower control arms (they are exactly like the largest bolts pictured in the kit). That may be on Lemforder but FCP should know better, as the two that are included are in the sealed bag with the larger control arms (not included separately like the other nuts). Also note this kit does not include any bolts, and you should probably replace the 3 per side that you are removing, as with 80k+ miles chances are yours are a bit rusty... you bet mine were! C'mon FCP, it's so easy to either suggest the hardware to add onto the kit (the bolts) or have it included directly, but there is no excuse for forgetting the two larger nuts.

Ask a question
Question Posted by a customer
Is this kit for both sides? I can't figure out in description. Thanks
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This is a kit for both sides of the front, lower arms only.
Question Posted by a customer
It appears 4 of the 12 point nut, 31126780480, are needed but only 2 were included in my kit. The two that were included were in the packaging for the tension struts. Are four expected to be part of this kit or am I supposed to know to order those seperately?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The 12-point nuts are used on the ball joints for the forward and rearward control arms. It is required for them to be included. They are supposed to be included with the control arms. If you are short on the required locking nut, please contact service@fcpeuro.com so we can send you the quantity needed.
Question Posted by Jacques
What are the torque specs?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Lower rearward arm (wishbone/straight arm): Strut to control arm: 80Nm. Ball joint to knuckle: 165Nm. Bushing to subframe: 80Nm. Lower forward arm (thrust arm/tension strut): Ball joint to knuckle: 165Nm. Bushing to subframe: 100Nm + 90°.
Question Posted by Phan
So this kit is known for missing combo nuts. Has this problem been addressed and will this kit ship with the missing nuts? (Part number 31126780480)
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, the combination nuts for the ball joint end are included.
Question Posted by a customer
will this fit a car with adaptive suspension option?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The control arms are the same regardless of suspension options.
