Product Information

Referred to as a tension strut by BMW, includes inner bushing

This control arm is a common wear item on higher mileage BMW. It is responsible with "locating" the front suspension and is an important component. The inner bushing is known to fail first resulting in vibrations at about 55MPH. The inner bushing can be replaced but in most cases if the inner bushing fails the outer ball joint has failed which will require replacement of the entire control arm.

Always replace control arms in matched pairs for best performance and service life.

Suspension Control Arm

Control arms are crucial link in a vehicle's suspension connecting the suspension to a vehicle's subframe. These pieces are usually hinged to allow for suspension to travel and articulate as the vehicle rides over obstructions in the road and while the vehicle turns. Many vehicles such as those with independent suspensions have multiple links and feature several connection points and arms to offer better ride quality and comfort.

As bushings and joints in a control arm begin to wear you may notice a looseness feel in your suspension. And while many arms have replaceable and serviceable individual components, many still require the replacement of the entire arm. Below are signs of when a replacement control arm may be needed:

Suspension Control Arm Failure Symptoms
  • Play in suspension joints where these arms meet the subframe and/or knuckle
  • Buckling noise emanating from the suspension
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Inability to properly align vehicle
  • Shutter or vibration coming from the steering wheel at highway speed
  • Wandering or pulling sensation from side to side felt on the steering wheel

Have failed prematurely twice
Have used Lemforder on two cars now, and they have failed early on both. Current F15 is squeaking after only 5 months with replacement installed. Not worth the savings over OEM. FCP warranty not really worth the hassle, and doesn’t take into account the required alignment every time you swap.

Failed about 10000 miles
The original part last 140000 miles without problem. Replace it with this as preventive maintenance, big mistake Leaving fluid about 10K miles. Replaced it again with lifetime warranty from FCP EURO. Leaking fluid again. I would suggest to avoid this.

Leaking after 12000 miles
Looked like a nice high quality OE replacement part but the main bushing failed after just over 12,000 miles… they aren’t difficult to replace, but it is annoying.

Suspension arms
Bought these arms as original ones had failed bushings (common BMW X5 problem). Lemforder apparently the best for OEM replacement. Thought best to replace the whole arm as it comes with new ball joint as well (have bought Lemforder parts for this car and another car before). I live in Australia so they were sent to me fast and received ok. Professional shop fitted these and wheel aligned. All good. However ~25,000kms later the bush on one side is now leaking and needs to be replaced. Very unimpressed as this is not a cheap exercise to do (again).. Having a failure so soon is not good, No point claiming FCP warranty on parts (which is nice) as you have to reorder the same part (which I won't). I will be replacing the bushes now with the polyurethane ones from Powerflex (PFF5-1401). I don't want/need this problem again. ehh..

The only suspension brand I will use on my BMW.
These are the same manufacturer as factory tension struts. My brand new drivers side tension strut started leaking silicone oil from the bushing after 200 miles. A little bummed I have to replace it again even with setting the suspension correctly and torquing the bolts properly. Anyway, always happy to be an FCP customer knowing they have my back.
