Product Information

A common source of overheating problems

Your BMW's engine cooling fan, or auxiliary cooling fan assembly, is responsible for keeping your BMW running cool. Your BMW's cooling system depends on air traveling through the radiator to dissipate heat. For the most part this is accomplished when you are driving your car down the road. However, if you are sitting at a standstill with your engine running air flow is drastically reduced.

That's when your BMW's auxiliary fan assembly kicks into action, literally. When this fan assembly ages the fan motor is known to fail along with the speed control relay which is mounted to this assembly. If your BMW is overheating in traffic this fan not turning on is likely the culprit.

Engine Cooling Fan Assembly

The Engine Cooling Fan Assembly is a crucial component of a vehicle’s cooling system. It consists of an electric or mechanical fan, shroud, motor, and related wiring or clutch mechanism. Its main role is to pull or push air through the radiator to regulate coolant temperature, especially when the vehicle is idling or moving at low speeds where natural airflow is limited.

Key functions:

  • Prevents engine overheating by maintaining proper coolant temperature.
  • Assists air conditioning performance by cooling the condenser.
  • Supports overall engine efficiency and longevity.
Engine Cooling Fan Assembly Failure Symptoms
  • Engine overheating – temperature gauge rises, especially in traffic or at idle.
  • Air conditioning performance drops – AC blows warmer air when the fan isn’t running.
  • Fan not turning on – visible when checking under the hood, even when the engine is hot.

Doesn’t fit
For the most expensive option right under an actual BMW part, it’s the worst fitting part FCP offers and I buy from this site pretty regularly. The manufacturer needs to revise the shroud. Didn’t think I’d be modifying a “OE Equivalent” part to end up modifying it to fit in a factory application. 0/10 don’t recommend for the money.

2003 BMW 330i
The motor doesn't go bad, but the circuit board. The fitment is not as good as OEM. It's been 2 years.

Functions fine, but poor fitment
The fan operates as expected and fits well enough into the factory mounting location that I’m confident in the cooling ability. The issue is that it doesn’t seat fully in the diagonal slot on the bottom drivers side corner and the entire fan it about a half inch too high. This means the screw on the passenger side threads in a bit, but the plastic push pin on the drivers side isn’t securing anything. Pretty disappointing but I don’t want to pay $600 for genuine BMW so it’ll do.

misfit
ordered this to replace my mechanical fan in a 2002 330ci and it would not fit. the girth of the unit would not pass components on the engine. had to return because unusable. cost me 76$ to return. i feel cost to return should be on fcp due to fitment (or lack thereof) when description said it would fit.

No more garbage truck engine noise! Easy to install!
The fan was very well packaged, and arrived in perfect condition. The mechanical fan clutch in my 2003 325xi had been replaced a couple of years ago. For some reason, that caused my fan to run very fast/loud, making a "whooshing" whining sound. I finally got around to doing the electric fan swap, and couldn't be happier. This fan fits perfectly in place of the mechanical fan, and uses the electrical connection from the auxiliary fan (which is no longer used/needed). Took the car for a drive. Outside temp was 87F, and my engine temp remained right where it should be, both driving and at idle, and with or without the AC running. And all I heard on acceleration was the sweet sound of the engine, instead of the noise of an accelerating garbage truck. As an added bonus, there is now zero chance that my mechanical fan will blow up and take out other engine components with it. This is known to happen, though my fan did look to be in pretty good condition. One thing I want to mention: when doing the swap, you will need to move the air quality sensor (the small rectangular box attached to the top edge of the mechanical fan) to the new electric fan. This box is where the smaller electrical connection from the mechanical fan goes.

Doesn't Really Fit
I had to modify the housing/shroud so that it would fit as it should. The fan and controller are working as expected.

Excellent Plug and Play Conversion
Fit is perfect and required no modifications to convert from my manual fan to this electric version.

Could I please get the depth dimension? Looking for one that will fit a slightly slimmer space than original assembly.

I have a 2004 325ci automatic, if this plug and play for replacement? I see many posting that this replaces the clutch fan but want to be sure I need to keep both and don’t have to mess too much with wires
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, this is plug and play for the radiator fan.

Hey team, I have a 2001 530I and I'm considering to replace my clutch fan with an electrical fan but I couldn't find anything under the e39 in the website. Since the 330i shares the same engine (M54), I was wondering if this electrical fan could be installed in my e39? Thanks
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
No, this part # only fits E46 3 series non-m vehicles. E39 5 series auxiliary fan would be part # 64546921395.
Question Posted by a customer
Hello! I just installed this fan and removed the manual radiator fan and the mechanical fan, but the new fan won’t turn off now after the engines off, it killed the battery, but I haven’t changed anything else. It isn’t the coolant temperature switch, tried two of those, is it the final stage resister on the fan?

Question Posted by a customer
I have a bmw 325i with an automatic transmission would I be able to run both my aux fan and this new fan or do I need to remove it? If so why?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Automatic transmission cars utilize a fan clutch for the main engine cooling fan. To use this fan on an automatic car you would need to remove the auxiliary pusher fan upfront of the AC condenser and then use the electrical connector that goes to that fan in order to power and control this fan.

I have a 2002 330ci manual. Would this one be a direct replacement?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes.
Question Posted by a customer
I have a 2005 BMW 325CI with an automatic transmission and a mechanical fan. Besides taking out the mechanical fan, does there need to be any other modification for this fan to fit or does this fan just drop in and sit on the base plate of the radiator? And what connection is used to power this fan? Does it use the ac condenser fan connection to power it or the connector that goes to the small box that sits on the fan shroud I have now?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, you'll need to remove the auxiliary fan in front of the A/C condenser. Outside of that, the fan is plug and play. This p/n is powered using the default rectangular connector affixed to the fan assembly.
Question Posted by Tom
My 2003 BMW is a manual so this would be correct. I have electrical problems so wondering if switching to a single clutch fan would provide adequate cooling (alone?)
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
No, converting to a mechanical fan is not going to be enough. Vehicles with a mechanical fan also use an electric pusher fan. Our recommendation is to fix the existing electrical issue as it could cause other problems down the road.
Question Posted by Daniel
Is any modification required to change my mechanical fan to this electric fan on my automatic?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes. You'll need to remove the auxiliary fan in front of the A/C condensor. Outside of that the fan is plug and play.
