CV Joint Boot Kit

A CV joint boot serves to protect the axle joint and axle by keeping out dirt, water, and debris while preserving the grease that lubricates the joint. As a vital component of the drivetrain system, it enables the wheels to move in coordination with the vehicle’s suspension. Regular inspection of CV boots is essential, and they should be replaced before any signs of failure appear. Replacing a boot typically involves removing the old one, reapplying grease, and fitting a new boot, which will require tools for expanding the boot over the joint as well as clamping a special style clamp on both ends to prevent exposure. At the point of service, it is also recommended to expect the condition of the joint, if the joint is damaged, a full joint replacement may be necessary.

  • NVH: Clicking or popping sounds when turning or under load caused by binding in the joint during articulation
  • Leakage: Grease splattered on or around the inward-facing side of a wheel and/or suspension components behind the spindle

Clamps are multifit and may need adjusting
Written July 2021 - reviews need year displayed so you know how relevant. I bought these as part of the Volvo kit (GKN 31256231KT ) which had reviews that mentioned small clamp size being too big so knew I needed to check the clamp sizes. The oetiker clamps appear to be a multifit version (see the pictures) and on the largest settings are too big. The small clamp needs to be on the middle two openings. It is quite tight and I had to set it to that size off the boot (but over the axle) and then slide it over the boot. The boot has a lip so you may need to use a pair of pliers or screwdriver to push it over the lip. The large clamp needs to be set to the smallest size. I could do this whilst in position on the boot.

The exact boot to your genuine cv joint
This is the exact same boot that is installed in your genuine cv. Don't let a mechanic scare you into something else. However i recommend you buy this in order to save a relatively new cv joint; as opposed to saving a really old one as it is just simpler/easier to just replace an entire cv joint.

Inner axle boots,
S60 2002 2.4T, (need bearing puller 3 finger, CTA-4210 Oetiker clamp pliers, gloves, paper) after dismantling the CV joint and laying it out to reassemble in the same orientation, remove the spigot and clean everything. I wiped it clean and did not wash the parts. Installed the new boot with clip and reassembled the spigot and 3 bearings. Then pack the grease into the housing and insert the spigot into the slide housing. Last grease goes into the boot side of the spigot and seal it up and crimp the clamps. All inner and pouter done which extends the life of the axles as the new grease got rid of the occasional clicking when on a sharp turn.

OE Quality Boot
Perfect fit for my '04 A4 Quattro with manual trans. GKN is the OEM for CV boots on my car and replacing just the boot is a cost effective way to repair an axle instead of replacing it with a reman or lower quality aftermarket axle.

The boot rubber seems very substantial. The fit was very good. I am guessing it will last a long time. Installation of this inner boot was easy but you will need special pliers to crimp the band clamps.
