Hood Safety Catch

A hood safety catch is a secondary locking mechanism that holds the hood in place if the primary hood latch fails or is accidentally released. Located near the front of the hood, it prevents the hood from flying open while driving, which could block the driver’s view and cause a serious safety hazard. The safety catch must be manually released (usually by reaching under the hood) before the hood can be fully opened.

Hood Safety Catch Failure Symptoms
  • Hood not secured safely – hood may pop up or vibrate while driving if the catch doesn’t hold.
  • Difficulty opening the hood – safety catch sticks, rusts, or jams, making it hard to release.
  • Visible wear or corrosion – bent, rusted, or damaged catch that compromises its function.
