Rear Brake Kit
I ordered this rear Zimmerman Rotors and Akebono pad kit and couldn't be happier. I've always used Zimmerman rotors on my BMWs and Audis all my life with nothing but smiles all around. The Zimmerman rotors are durable, dissipate heat very well whether you are tracking your car or going for a spirited drive, and resist rust very well. Couple these with very low to non-existent Akebono pads, and you'll be washing your wheels far less. The one thing I enjoy about the Akebono pads is that the hotter the brake surface gets, the stronger the bite. Plus the fact that Akebono pads have a very good wear life, especially for my lead foot, you can't beat it. If you're doing a brake rebuild, I highly recommend this kit. Just make sure after you install this kit you bed your brakes in. Here is the process I use (note: this is what I have used and have good results, but there are a ton of ways to bed your brakes in). PLEASE make sure this is done late at night or in an area where there are is no one behind you: 1.) When starting off, drive the car normally and brake frequently, medium to hard pressure, but not enough to trigger the ABS. 2.) bring the car up to 30 mph, then hit the brakes hard, do not trigger ABS. Quickly bring the car back up to 30 mph then brake hard again. Do this about 4 times. The goal is to build heat. 3.) Bring the car up to 60 mph, then hit the brakes at medium pressure, slowing down to 30 mph. Quickly go up to 60 mph again, then back down to 30 mph, medium pressure. Do this 3 times. 4.) Bring the car up to 80 mph, then brake HARD (do not trigger ABS) down to 30 mph. Quickly bring the car up to 80 mph, then back down to 30 mph. Do this about 4 times. You will see smoke coming out and your pedal feeling a little gummy from the heat build up. This is fine and expected. Drive the car normally, and let the brakes cool down. Drive for about a couple miles. This should be plenty of enough time to cool down your brakes, as the Zimmerman rotors dissipate heat VERY well. Try to avoid braking as much as you can. If you come to a stop light, do not worry. Just try not to press on the brake pedal too hard while you're stopped. Just enough pressure to keep the car from rolling. Once your bakes have cooled down, do the process over again: 1.) 30 mph down to zero, medium brake pedal pressure. Do this 2 times. 2.) 60 mph down to 30 mph, hard brake pedal pressure, do not trigger ABS, then back up to 60 mph. Do this about 2 times. 3.) 80 mph down to 60 mph, hard brake pedal pressure, do not trigger ABS, then back up to 80 mph. Do this about 3 times. You should barely see any more smoke now, but still some smoke from the pads. Drive the car around and cool off the brakes. Then park your car, and let things cool off for a couple or so hours. After everything has cooled, you will see a nice lapis blue color on your rotors. This is a good color as your brakes have now bed in. The next time you drive, your car is going to brake much more quickly and on point, no smoke. Proceed to drive normally from there. Again, this is MY method, not the be all, end all method. This is how it works for me.
