The Volkswagen Corrado was produced from 1988 to 1995, although it was only available to the United States market for the 1990 through 1994 model years. It was intended to replace the successful Scirocco model, a similarly styled sports car from Volkswagen. The car is a two door with a rear hatch, referred to as a hatchback coupé by Volkswagen. The car was engineered using a combination of the Volkswagen B3 and the A2 platform and shared many mechanical similarities to the Golf and Jetta. While the car performed well, it was deemed overpriced by many and unfortunately didnt sell very well resulting in a short production run and a total of less than 100,000 made worldwide. British magazine “Car” placed the Corrado on a list of “25 cars you must drive before you die”. More recently, Richard Hammond (the host of popular BBC chow “Top Gear”) stated that the Corrado “drives as well as if not better than a lot of current cars” and that it was “properly quick”. The car was noted for its exceptional handling, and when equipped with the VR6 2.8L (USA models)W6 engine it produced 179 horsepower. Combining this power with such a small body produced a fairly fast vehicle.
